The first teaser for "Munmu," imbued with majestic pathos, has finally been released.
Munmu, a new historical epic drama on KBS 2TV scheduled to premiere in November (written by Kim Ri-heon and Hong Jin-yi, directed by Kim Young-jo, composed by Goh Seong-jun), depicts the desperate and solitary grand narrative of leaders who wagered everything for a single victory amid 600 years of continuous wars and internal turmoil within the Three Kingdoms.
Munmu is a collaboration between director Kim Young-jo, who demonstrated solid directing through Jang Yeong-sil, Jingbirok, and Geunchogo, and writers Kim Ri-heon and Hong Jin-yi. Along with its enormous scale and densely woven narrative, trusted actors including Lee Hyun-wook (as Kim Beom-min), Jang Hyuk (as Yeon Gaesomun), Kim Kangwoo (as Kim Chun-chu), and Park Sung-woong (as Kim Yu-shin) join the cast, promising to showcase the essence of a classic historical drama.
Among them, the first teaser for Munmu released on the 25th grabs attention immediately with the intense gaze of Kim Beom-min (Munmu, the 30th king of Silla) standing in the midst of the battlefield.
Under the battlefield shadowed by a total solar eclipse, Kim Beom-min recalls conversations he had with Silla's great general Kim Yu-shin and his father Kim Chun-chu (the 29th king of Silla, Taejong Muyeol). Kim Yu-shin's question, "Where is your will directed?" and Kim Chun-chu's question, "Have you made up your mind?", vividly reveal the deep anguish borne by Kim Beom-min as a man and as a ruler.
Then appears the cold image of Goguryeo's dictator Yeon Gaesomun asking, "Do you not hear the sound of war?", followed by the corpses of soldiers fallen in battle, depicting the fear and dread of those who had to survive an era of chaos. At the same time, each character's fierce desire for victory fills the screen.
From blockbuster-scale sieges to vast lines of troops crossing wastelands, and the majesty of Kim Yu-shin and Yeon Gaesomun heading to the battlefield, the teaser completes an overwhelming scale. The vividly captured scenes of brutal war show the sharp conflicts among the Three Kingdoms while delivering explosive tension that heightens immersion.
Staring at the bloodstained battlefield, Kim Beom-min repeats, "Everyone's desires and resentments became a blaze that began to push the Three Kingdoms." Confronting the intertwined fates of countless people who risk their lives for the country, Kim Beom-min tightens his grip on the sword in his hand, revealing his firm resolve. The passage raises curiosity about what choice the ruler bearing the nation's fate will make.
Thus, with only the first teaser, Munmu announced the beginning of a grand narrative that pierces the flow of vast history. Overwhelming battle scenes, majestic cinematography, and the passionate performances of actors perfectly embodying their characters combine to raise expectations for an authentic historical drama. Attention is focused on what story and weighty message the confrontation of the Three Kingdoms, which fought with the nation's fate on the line, will leave behind.
