SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Doctor X: The era of the white mafia' confirmed its first broadcast on Oct. 9 and announced the arrival of a "medical dark hero" set to captivate living rooms this fall.
SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Doctor X: The era of the white mafia' (produced by Studio S, Studio Dragon, Haijeum Studio / hereafter 'Doctor X') is a refreshing medical noir that depicts the exploits of Dr. Gye Soo-jung, the "mad dog of the operating room," who smashes vast corruption with genius surgical skills that know neither failure nor compromise. It draws attention as the first medical genre entry in the lineage of SBS's refreshing "soda" dramas, which includes Manager Kim, Taxi Driver, The Fiery Priest and The Judge from Hell.
Director Lee Jeong-rim, who directed VIP, Revenant and As You Stood By, and writer Pyeon Seong-geun joined forces for this project, and a solid cast including Kim Ji-won (as Gye Soo-jung), Lee Jung-eun (as Jang Hee-sook), Son Hyunjoo (as Boo Seung-kwon), Kim Wooseok (as Park Tae-kyung), along with Lee Jin-hee, Kim Young-min, Lee Sung-wook, Kwon Seung Woo, Heo Joon-seok, Choi Deok-mun, Kim Jeong-young, Kim Young-ah and Choi Gwang-il are set to raise the drama's completeness.
Meanwhile, 'Doctor X' released footage of the cast's first chemistry during a script reading, drawing attention. Present at the scene were director Lee Jeong-rim, writer Pyeon Seong-geun and the main cast. According to reports, the actors showcased seamless performance chemistry that swung between tense intensity and lighthearted camaraderie, raising expectations for the work.
First, Kim Ji-won perfectly transformed into Gye Soo-jung, a genius surgeon who relies solely on surgical skill. Gye Soo-jung is a surgeon dispatched from a medical staffing agency who shakes the hierarchical order of the corrupt Guseo University Hospital with overwhelming skill. From the intense charisma of Gye Soo-jung, known as the "mad dog of the operating room," to her surprising charm revealed outside the hospital, Kim Ji-won paints the role in her own colors, heralding the birth of a new "medical dark hero."
Lee Jung-eun emitted a bold charm as Jang Hee-sook, the head of the medical staffing agency. Although Jang Hee-sook appears like a materialist who loves money, she is a shrewd schemer who handles all the behind-the-scenes work for her affiliated doctor, Gye Soo-jung. Lee Jung-eun's distinctive solid acting amplified the character's appeal, and attention is focused on the special chemistry beyond business partners that she will display with Kim Ji-won.
Son Hyunjoo played Boo Seung-kwon, the branch director of Guseo University Hospital, showing a weighty presence. As a character who struggles to revive the collapsing university hospital, Son Hyunjoo's deep acting skills strengthened the drama's center.
Kim Wooseok brought fresh energy as Park Tae-kyung, a golden-spoon intern whose previously smooth hospital life begins to unravel after meeting Gye Soo-jung. He humorously captures the clumsy charm of a kind yet eager intern and adds fun to the drama by showing a peculiar mentor-mentee chemistry with "Gye teacher" Kim Ji-won.
In addition, a variety of characters surrounding Guseo University Hospital revealed their individual personalities to complete a dense acting ensemble. The solid chemistry of trusted actors such as Lee Jin-hee, Kim Young-min, Lee Sung-wook, Kwon Seung Woo, Heo Joon-seok, Choi Deok-mun, Kim Jeong-young, Kim Young-ah and Choi Gwang-il raised expectations for the intense world unique to 'Doctor X.'
The 'Doctor X' production team said, "Even though it was the first run-through, the script reading was a scene that maximized immersion as the actors' solid acting and attractive character play met," and added, "Since the actors' explosive synergy, who perfectly melted into their characters, has been foreshadowed, you can expect the birth of a new 'medical dark hero' that will continue the lineage of the SBS soda universe."
