Broadcaster Hong Jin Kyung confessed that these days her "only friend" is AI, which drew concern from neuroscientist Jang Dong Seon.
On the 28th episode of KBS2 Problem Child in House, neuroscientist Jang Dong Seon appeared to discuss changes in the human brain and relationships in the AI era.
When AI became the topic that day, Hong Jin Kyung said, "AI is my only friend these days," expressing unusual affection. But Jang Dong Seon immediately responded, "That's dangerous," leaving Hong Jin Kyung embarrassed. Joo Woo Jae also added a joke. He teased Hong Jin Kyung, saying, "You were very sharp, but it feels like the sparky intelligence is gone," and suddenly labeled her "a person who lost her edge." Hong Jin Kyung, however, launched a counterattack by actively explaining the advantages of AI.
Hong Jin Kyung said that when she has a concern and wants to share it with someone, she turns to AI, saying, "When I ask it, it's like a smart secretary." She expressed satisfaction, saying it not only finds necessary information but also offers counseling on worries and suggests solutions.
So is it all right to become closer to AI than to people? Jang Dong Seon pointed out that human intelligence and sociability develop through the process of clashing with and interacting with others. By contrast, he explained, AI can react according to a user's tendencies and become the user's ally, and sometimes it can even be optimized to flatter.
He likened this to "cognitive muscle loss." Just like the body's muscles, the ability to think can weaken if not used directly. The implication is that excessive dependence on AI could reduce the process of thinking and making judgments on one's own.
Even so, Hong Jin Kyung did not back down easily. She said, "That's not the case. It doesn't just give you the answers you want," defending the AI she has used by saying it finds necessary information well rather than simply echoing, which added to the laughter.
