Actors Lee Seo-jin and Kim Kwang-kyu complained about the more upgraded shooting hardships of "My Genie Secretary".
On the afternoon of the 28th at the Kensington Hotel in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, an SBS press conference was held for the new variety show My Genie Secretary. Actors Lee Seo-jin and Kim Kwang-kyu and PD Kim Jung-wook attended the conference and spoke.
My Genie Secretary is a variety show in which Lee Seo-jin and Kim Kwang-kyu, beyond the simple role of managers, provide an upgraded "high-class close care" as "real secretaries" responsible even for the stars' most intimate and private areas.
That day PD Kim Jung-wook, asked why he chose the season 2 subtitle "My Genie Secretary," said, "From the end of season 1 I thought season 2 should go like this. Seojin hyung revealed that he was becoming a slave as he filmed 16 times in real time. Because he has a slave mentality, I thought we should go in this direction rather than being prickly. I felt if we named it like this the hyungs would work harder," and explained, "He scoffed. That was to some extent a positive sign. So it was decided that way and the hyungs are working harder during recordings than last season. I feel there is conflict within them. The slave mentality comes out and then goes away, and I wanted to watch that process, so I tried the name. Also, we changed the name because we wanted to give them more roles than just manager duties."
In response, Lee Seo-jin, who had said "we're always filming with difficulty," fired back, "The production team arbitrarily gave a title without consulting me at all. I had no idea about it," and continued, "There was no new determination or anything. During last season's filming I hated how I was getting used to being a secretary, so I try as much as possible not to adapt even now. That's my resolution. I hate myself adapting, so I'm trying not to adapt as much as possible, but during filming I find myself annoyingly adapting, so I'm trying not to. The purpose of 'My Genie Secretary' was to show how grateful people should be for their secretaries, but we do it so well that the stars don't seem to appreciate their managers, and I dislike that. My resolution is to try not to adapt as much as possible," he said firmly.
Then Kim Kwang-kyu said, "I also have no thoughts. I've lived like that all along. Even in the military I lived accommodating the squad members and the company commander and seniors' preferences, and since childhood I've lived catering to hyungs. I've always lived being aware of others. It seems they named it 'My Genie Secretary' to mean be even more attentive, but I do everything if the PD tells me to," he said, conveying his new season determination.
When asked how much the intensity of 'serving' has been upgraded compared to before, Lee Seo-jin said, "Actually it's always difficult. But maybe that's it. It's the early season and it's harder because it's newly starting, but after the middle part as we get used to serving, it seems to get a little easier. It's a slave mentality. At first there's complaints and dissatisfaction, then it gradually becomes a program where they conform," he said.
Then Kim Kwang-kyu said, "More than that, my stamina is declining. The recording time is longer compared to other variety shows. It's very inefficient. If it were senior Lee Kyung-kyu he'd really dislike it. There are cases where we start early in the morning and finish at dawn. Nevertheless, because the drama and film market is not good, we're working hard. If the film stops I'll quit," he declared, causing uproarious laughter.
In particular, Lee Seo-jin cited the excellence award at the entertainment awards as the reason for appearing in season 2. He said, "If it weren't for that I would have refused, but after receiving the excellence award I considered season 2," and added that Kim Kwang-kyu said, "The economy is very bad. We're not in a position to be choosy. I'm taking jobs in the order they come. When they come, I do them as they come, so I have to work hard," which added to the laughter.
Meanwhile, My Genie Secretary will air its first episode tonight (the 28th) at 11:10 p.m.
