Director Christopher Nolan's new film "The Odyssey 2026" has held the top spot at the box office since its release and is on the verge of surpassing 8 million cumulative moviegoers.
According to the Korean Film Council's box office database on the 28th, "The Odyssey 2026" drew about 150,000 moviegoers the previous day to take No. 1 at the daily box office. Its revenue share was 61.4%.
Released on the 5th, "The Odyssey 2026" has not yielded the No. 1 spot for 23 days since opening, not even for Haru. Cumulative admissions stand at about 7,806,000, and it is expected to surpass 8 million as early as today or over the weekend.
"The Odyssey 2026" depicts the journey of Odysseus, the hero of the Trojan War, as he returns to his homeland. For the first time in film history, it was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, drawing audiences with its large-format visuals and sound.
As demand for IMAX screens surged, scalping transactions even emerged. CGV recently limited the number of tickets one person can reserve for the Yongsan I'Park Mall IMAX theater, and the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) also began accepting reports related to scalping.
At No. 2 at the box office was "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," starring Tom Holland. About 34,000 people watched it the previous day, bringing cumulative admissions to about 8,297,000. "The Journey to Gyeongju," starring Lee Jung-eun, Kong Hyojin, Park So-dam, and Lee Yeon, ranked third with about 25,000.
As of 8 a.m. that day, "The Odyssey 2026" also maintained a commanding lead in the reservation rate at 67.9%. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" was at 9.6%, and "The Journey to Gyeongju" was at 4.6%.
