Actress Gu Hye-sun revealed income from music copyrights.
On the 27th, the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property official YouTube channel released a video titled "a message to those who endlessly challenge themselves, from actor to painter, from film director to patent holder."
Gu Hye-sun has also registered and launched a patented unfolding hair roller and is active as a venture entrepreneur. Gu Hye-sun said, "Because the undergraduate graduation requirement was 'patent application,' I took interdisciplinary classes with engineering friends to find ideas. I was inspired after reading a New York Times column analyzing the "aesthetic liberation" phenomenon in Korean society when I saw students rolling their hair with hair rollers on public transportation," and "I succeeded in registering the patent in two years and it led to commercialization."
Gu Hye-sun's venture startup stemmed from her experience running a film production company. Gu Hye-sun said, "Although the film production company did not generate substantial revenue for a long time, it also became a valuable foundation for handling one IP. Compared with conventional round hair rollers, we reduced plastic usage by 80% and received venture company certification."
Gu Hye-sun is also a new-age composer who has registered 58 songs over 20 years in addition to invention patents. Regarding income from music copyrights, Gu Hye-sun said, "I have steadily composed new-age music for 20 years and have about 58 registered pieces. Even if they are not mainstream hits, because they are instrumental BGM without vocals, they are widely used as background music on variety shows, in cafes, and in hospitals, so copyright revenue is generated steadily every month," and she declined to give specific details about copyright income.
Finally, when asked about her ultimate goal, Gu Hye-sun said, "to live a comfortable and prosperous life in old age," and said, "Even if I do not have real estate like buildings, I am steadily accumulating IP so that I can gain both the mental pride and material stability of 'my created intellectual property protecting me as my solid asset.'"
Meanwhile, Gu Hye-sun has been on hiatus as an actress since leaving the MBC program 'You are too much' in 2017 due to health issues.
