'You Quiz on the Block' Sam Kim cried over guilt toward his mother, who became credit impaired, and his family members.
On the 26th broadcast, the tvN variety show 'You Quiz on the Block' (hereafter 'You Quiz') featured first-generation Italian chef Sam Kim, who revealed his difficult family history.
That day Sam Kim confessed that his family once owned five houses thanks to his mother running a boarding house and his father running a steel business, enjoying a comfortable life, but the household fell apart when the IMF hit.
Above all, Sam Kim said that because he developed an interest in cooking from his mother, after completing military service he dreamed of studying in the United States. He greatly wanted to go to America and try cooking there at least once.
Sam Kim said he told his parents he would become an accountant and explained, "For my study abroad expenses, my mother went to a secondary financial institution and borrowed 300,000 won. She said when the money runs out I should come back."
After Sam Kim left, his mother became credit impaired. Having returned to Korea after seven years, Sam Kim recalled, "At that time I was really shocked. It had changed into a much smaller semi-basement room. My parents looked older. At that moment I felt so sorry."
He continued, "What made me feel guilty was that I was so happy during those seven years of cooking. Each day was a new experience. I was cooking, learning and happy, but meanwhile during those seven years my family…" and he added, "I felt like such a sinner."
Eventually Sam Kim confessed to his parents that he was cooking, not working as an accountant. His mother was surprised for a moment, then handed him 100,000 won pocket money to help with cooking. Sam Kim said, "When we said our final goodbyes my heart was so heavy. I cried the whole time as soon as I boarded the plane."
He added, "I cried so much that the stewardess beside me could not speak. It was hard even after I went to the United States," and he shed tears over his guilt toward his family.<
