The controversy over Park Wi's "public service sniper" incident, who runs the YouTube channel "WeeRacle," remains heated. His titles as a 1 million-subscriber YouTuber and as someone who represented efforts to improve awareness of people with disabilities have already been forgotten, and criticism and condemnation are pouring in.
It has been nearly a week since the so-called "Park Wi social service worker sniper controversy" occurred. On the 14th, after using the KTX and while disembarking, Park Wi had his wheelchair caught on a social service worker's foot and suffered an accident in which he fell onto the platform.
A week later on the 21st, he released the CCTV footage of the incident on his YouTube channel and, unable to contain his anger, appeared emotional. Pouring his anger in the wrong direction, Park Wi was immediately criticized. It was pointed out that the social service worker did not act maliciously but made a mistake while trying to help Park Wi according to the wheelchair ramp usage manual, and that the worker had apologized politely, yet Park Wi said "I'm so angry just that their foot was placed on the ramp" and released CCTV footage that could potentially identify the person on his YouTube channel with 1 million subscribers.
In response, Park Wi deleted the video and posted an 11-line apology that included the content "I did not consider the position of the staff member who did their best to help me and apologized politely. I thought only negatively about a mistake that occurred in the process of trying to help me better. My way of conveying it was clumsy and my thinking was short-sighted."
Even after the apology, public anger did not stop. In particular, the channel's behavior, which contradicted the messages it had promoted, arrived as a great disappointment and even felt like a betrayal.
The YouTube channel "WeeRacle," operated by Park Wi, had uploaded 788 videos to date, drawing attention and rapidly growing by presenting his daily life and challenges after being diagnosed with complete paralysis and using a wheelchair with positive energy.
In particular, Park Wi was praised for leading efforts to improve social awareness of people with disabilities through public transportation ride-alongs showing his experiences using Seoul city buses and subways, insights into institutional accommodations such as designated parking spaces for people with disabilities, and overseas advanced barrier-free experience reports conveying impressions while traveling by wheelchair using foreign public transportation and tourism infrastructure.
But everything changed after the public service sniper incident. In particular, his past uploaded videos were reexamined and interpreted differently. Netizens who revisited Park Wi's videos said that regarding taxi rides and bus transfers he mostly expressed complaints and grievances rather than gratitude, and that he spread the perception that Korea is backward in accommodating people with disabilities. Comments on videos dealing with the content have continued with netizens saying they viewed Park Wi differently.
Because of these points, Park Wi acquired the disgraceful nickname "self-inflicted Park Wi." The rapidly declining subscriber count alone shows how serious public opinion has become. After posting the 11-line apology, Park Wi has remained completely silent.
