After that Sam Kim chose to enlist in the military, and after his discharge decided to study abroad for cooking. Yu Jae-seok asked, "It must have been hard to study abroad during the IMF era; how did you think of studying abroad?"
Sam Kim said, "I really wanted to go to the U.S. to cook at least once. But conversely the family's circumstances were bad. I told my family I wanted to be an accountant and left."
At the time his mother, who wanted Sam Kim to study abroad, said, "I went to a secondary financial institution and borrowed 300,000 won." Regarding this, Sam Kim said, "My mother said, 'But if the money runs out you'll have to come back.' My mother really gave me something big," expressing his gratitude.
Having gone to the U.S., Sam Kim found a small room for 250,000 won a month and began his study abroad life, and starting at a rice cake shop he naturally worked in restaurants and eateries and spent seven years there.
