Broadcaster Jeong Hyung Don opened up about the complicated feelings he felt while watching his mother, who had battled illness for a long time.
On the 21st, a video titled "Cholesterol is an essential ingredient for survival and reproduction (Are supplements useless?!)" was released on Jeong Hyung Don's YouTube channel, Untitled TV.
While discussing stroke with a specialist that day, Jeong Hyung Don naturally recalled his family's long illness. Jeong Hyung Don began by saying, "My grandmother and my mother lay bedridden for a long time." He went on to explain that because he had relatively comfortable finances he was able to have his mother hospitalized for about six and a half years, but his maternal grandmother's situation was different.
He recalled that when he was a child his family personally cleaned and bathed his maternal grandmother, and reflected on how long-term caregiving is so difficult not only for the patient but for the entire family.
When the specialist mentioned the practical difficulty, saying, "There is a saying that there is no devoted child during a long illness. Even after one to two years, conflicts can arise among family members," Jeong Hyung Don also confessed feelings he had not easily voiced at the time.
Looking at his mother, who had been lying in pain for a long time, Jeong Hyung Don confessed, "This shouldn't happen, but honestly there were times I wished she would pass away." He explained that it was not that he wanted his mother to die but that he wanted her to be free of pain and at peace, and recalled, "It was so hard that I thought I wanted her to stop suffering and go peacefully."
It was a confession mixed with guilt and pain that only someone who watched a family member endure a long illness up close can feel.
Jeong Hyung Don's mother collapsed from a stroke and continued a long battle with illness before passing away in 2022. Jeong Hyung Don has previously spoken several times on broadcasts about the pain he experienced during his mother's illness and caregiving process.
