With missing persons' bodies repeatedly found in Jeju, the revelation that singer Seong Hyun-woo once confessed to being threatened with a knife murder in Jeju has been revisited.
In February, Seong Hyun-woo uploaded a video on his personal YouTube channel titled "Almost murdered on a trip to Jeju Island, 100% true story."
That day Seong Hyun-woo said, "I didn't tell this story on broadcasts or radio. I was too scared to tell it in case someone saw it and came looking for me. Now that time has passed, I'm going to talk about it," and confessed to what he experienced in Jeju Island in 2021.
At the time, Seong Hyun-woo, who had gone to Jeju Island to get inspiration for an original song, went to a knife-cut noodle restaurant near his lodging. He recalled, "A middle-aged man drinking alone was swearing at a foreign part-time worker. Seeing a look for help, I said, 'I'm a customer too; could you please eat quietly?'"
The man replied, "Who are you to get involved," and Seong Hyun-woo said, "I'm a customer here too, and this isn't a restaurant where you're the only one," he said. Although the restaurant owner seemed to resolve the matter by escorting the man outside, after finishing his meal and stepping outside, the man called Seong Hyun-woo, saying, "Hey, come here."
However, the man's wrist had a weapon that looked like a fish fillet knife wrapped in bandages, and upon seeing this Seong Hyun-woo started running quickly. He confessed, "When I looked back, the man was running toward me with a knife. There was no one around to ask for help."
Eventually, after arriving at the guesthouse, Seong Hyun-woo immediately reported it to the police, and the man was reportedly arrested in a nearby alley. At the time, Seong Hyun-woo said that during the process of writing a statement he was asked by a police officer, "Why were you so frightened?"
Hearing this, Seong Hyun-woo replied, "Isn't this a situation to be frightened?" but the police officer advised, "It's common in Jeju," saying, "There are many seafarers near the seaside who threaten people with knives. It's best not to pick fights with seafarers if possible."
After mentioning the incident, when manipulation allegations arose, Seong Hyun-woo later released part of the screen showing the inquiry into the incident. The released screen included the case name "special intimidation" and an indication that the prosecutor's disposition had been completed.
Meanwhile, as multiple missing person cases have recently occurred in Jeju and controversy arose over the police's inadequate response, the murder threat experience mentioned by Seong Hyun-woo has been reexamined.
