Debate over YouTuber Park Wi's KTX fall accident shows no sign of cooling down. Park Wi directly apologized for the way he released the CCTV footage of the accident, and now a parent raising a child with a disability has publicly expressed disappointment, keeping the controversy alive.
Recently online, a comment by a writer who identified themselves as a long-time fan of Park Wi and a parent of a 10-year-old autistic son was shared. The writer introduced themselves by saying they had watched Park Wi's videos before his channel became well-known and had participated in related events with their children, and although they had supported him for such a long time, they cautiously criticized this choice, saying "it seems to have been reckless."
What caught their attention was the status of the service worker who appeared in the video. The writer argued, "Among service workers there are many people who, like my child, have high intelligence but did not receive a disability rating and graduated from special classes, in other words people with disabilities who fall into welfare blind spots, who also serve." They added, "That young man may be an ordinary service worker, but he might not be," meaning that because some of the service workers may have undisclosed circumstances, it is necessary to consider various possibilities when exposing an individual's mistake to the public.
The writer especially thought of their son. He said, "I, too, will have to send my child to the military in about 10 years," and expressed a realistic worry that although his son is not officially registered as a person with a disability, he has difficulty communicating and may one day serve as a service worker. He went on to say, "For someone, that video could be another wound and another form of discrimination," voicing disappointment again about the way a large channel exposed an individual's mistake.
Earlier, Park Wi suffered a fall on the KTX when the wheelchair wheel caught on the foot of a service worker who was on a portable ramp while he was getting off in his wheelchair. He later released the accident footage and emphasized the need for safe mobility environments, saying that even small carelessness by wheelchair users can lead to major accidents.
However, as it became known that the service worker did not cause the accident intentionally and had apologized at the scene, opinions diverged over the degree to which the CCTV should have been released. In the end, Park Wi made the video private and apologized, saying that his desire to raise awareness about safety had led him to insufficiently consider the position of the worker who helped him.
But with the newly publicized post by the parent of a child with a disability added to the mix, the controversy shows no sign of dying down. Some voices agreed with the writer's point, saying, "Even for raising a public interest issue, one should be cautious about exposing individuals," and "Making even the mistakes of someone trying to help the target of public judgment is something to think about." The safety of wheelchair users that Park Wi spoke about and the consideration for vulnerable people that the writer worried about are not matters to be taken lightly. While the appropriateness of releasing the video can be criticized, if that criticism is repeated in a way that hurts other people, the essence of the debate is bound to become blurred.
