The 80-year-old woman surnamed Park, who lived alone, was found dead in her home with both feet bound with blue tape and bleach sprayed on her face and feet.
The autopsy found the cause of death to be asphyxiation, and her neck and breast bones were fractured. The police, who found signs that the crime scene had been ransacked, initially gave weight to the possibility of a robbery. During the investigation, it was also confirmed that the victim had recently received about 65 million won in agricultural loss compensation, and the police secured testimony from villagers that someone had a dispute with the victim over that money.
The police checked villagers' alibis and analyzed CCTV at the village entrance. In that process, a vehicle with a covered license plate entering the village was captured at the estimated time of the victim's death. The police tracked the vehicle's movement path and continued the investigation, eventually identifying a woman in her 40s surnamed Kim as a prime suspect.
It was confirmed that Kim was a former daughter-in-law who had divorced the victim's son five years earlier. The police, noting circumstances that Kim had prepared the murder tools at home in advance and visited the victim with the vehicle's license plate covered, gave weight to the possibility of a premeditated crime, and it was reported that Kim left a message for the victim along the lines of "I hope you go to a better place" after committing the horrific crime, leaving people shocked.
Upon learning of the case, Max Changmin said "He or she could be one of the villagers who know well about the compensation," but reportedly could not continue speaking once the person's identity was revealed.
