"Punghyangjung," the domestic travel version of "Punghyanggo," has surpassed 20 million cumulative views thanks to its soaring popularity, and even the mayor of Iksan stepped forward to express his thanks.
On the 20th, a video titled "Punghyangjung, thank you for coming to Iksan" was released on Iksan city's official YouTube channel.
In the video that day, Mayor Choi Jeong-ho of Iksan appeared wearing the official "Punghyangjung" merchandise T-shirt and hat and said, "I sincerely thank the 20 million viewers who passionately supported the cast who came to Iksan relying on a paper map and their journey."
Mayor Choi said, "We will carefully take care of tourist conveniences and welcome benefits so that everyone who visits Iksan can leave feeling greatly satisfied, reflecting the valuable suggestions you offered in the comments."
"Punghyangjung" is an unplanned national road travel series that finds destinations relying only on a paper map without a cellphone or navigation, and it was produced as a three-part series starring Yu Jae-seok, Lee Sung-min, Jee Seokjin and Yang Se-chan. The three episodes have a cumulative 20.12 million views.
They chose Iksan, North Jeolla, as their destination and traveled along national and provincial roads through Asan, Gongju and Nonsan in South Chungcheong, then to Iksan and Gunsan in North Jeolla, and Boryung in South Chungcheong.
Since "Punghyangjung" was released, reactions saying they actually visited the featured areas and locals' travel recommendations have followed, reportedly helping revitalize the local economy.
