Broadcaster-turned-host Oh Jeong-yeon revealed that she has been battling eustachian tube patulous dysfunction, the same condition as singer IU.
On the 19th, Oh Jeong-yeon posted on her social media, "This year I learned for the first time that the chronic symptoms I have felt since high school have an actual disease name. #이관개방증."
She added, "I recently read an article that IU canceled her planned September concert because of this, and I felt even more sorry because I know the difficulty that inevitably manifests when I overdo exercise or broadcasting."
She also announced the surgery herself, saying, "I thought I would have to endure discomfort for 30 years, but once I learned it was a disease I sought an authority and finally had surgery. A small but not-simple operation."
Oh Jeong-yeon added, "If anyone else is uncomfortable because of the same condition, please consider treatment carefully as I did… If there is improvement, I expect the quality of life going forward to get better."
Eustachian tube patulous dysfunction refers to a condition in which the eustachian tube, which should normally be closed, remains abnormally open. Earlier, IU said last month that her eustachian tube patulous dysfunction symptoms had worsened, prompting adjustments to her scheduled September concert and the release date of her sixth studio album.
IU herself said, "Recently my chronic eustachian tube patulous dysfunction symptoms have been worsening. I have been managing and taking care, but the weather seems to have some effect… Looking back at the past few years, I may have pushed myself a bit too hard out of work ambition without considering my condition."
