Broadcaster Baek Ji-yeon disclosed that she experienced side effects after receiving a steroid injection known as a "bone shot."
On the 17th, Baek Ji-yeon introduced an acquaintance's case and her own experience related to steroid injections in a video posted on her YouTube channel.
Baek Ji-yeon said a healthy acquaintance in their 50s fell, felt discomfort in the knee, received a steroid injection, and then developed a purulent infection. It then progressed to sepsis and pneumonia, and the person ultimately died.
Baek said, "When I asked an orthopedic surgeon I know, they said it was really rare," adding, "It's an injection commonly used in practice, and an accident happened."
Baek Ji-yeon also said she experienced abnormal symptoms after receiving a steroid injection. She said, "I've had this injection many times, but once things went really wrong," adding, "The day before a YouTube recording, my face became intensely hot to the point I wondered if I had gotten a burn."
She went on, "I heard that bacteria on the skin can travel inward along the needle," adding, "The inside of the joint cavity is sterile, and with immunity suppressed by steroids, it can become an environment where bacteria thrive." She added, "If the injection site swells or the pain worsens and your temperature rises above 38 degrees Celsius, you should go to a hospital to check for infection."
Baek Ji-yeon joined MBC in 1987 as an announcer hired through open recruitment and has worked as a freelance broadcaster since leaving in 1999. She now runs a YouTube channel.
