Hong Ji-min explained, "My father was active in an independence movement group called Baekdusanhoe in 1940 and was arrested in 1943. He served time in prison for violating the Public Order Preservation Act and was liberated while in prison."
She added, "He carried out acts like blowing up shipments of military supplies bound for Japan," and recalled, "Prison life was unimaginably harsh, and many people actually died after being tortured. Fortunately my father endured and survived."
Hong Ji-min said her father died when she was 20, adding, "My father later suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and his left side was paralyzed. Until he died he worked on preparing documents for independence activists who had not been recognized. I am so proud and he was amazing."
