Gillian Anderson, who moved from London, England to Michigan in the United States at age 11, recalled, "In high school I started one of my first relationships with an older female student," adding, "At the time that relationship felt secretive, forbidden and wrong, so I had to hide it." She went on to say, "Later my boyfriend found out about it and broke up with me."
She reflected on that time, saying, "I didn't think of myself as gay. I couldn't find the right language to describe a relationship with the same sex, and I didn't think a relationship with a woman would be forever," adding, "When I was young I tended to view relationships with women as temporary."
She also revealed a dramatic schooldays behind-the-scenes: at 12 she entered a gay bar with a fake ID and at 15 she dated a 24-year-old man for three years. She had previously admitted in an interview that she "was in a rebellious attitude and relationships that surprised people."
After two marriages and divorces, Gillian Anderson, who has three children, has maintained a long-term relationship with The Crown producer Peter Morgan. She emphasized that her sense of partnership transcends gender, saying, "The person I currently consider my life partner is male, but I would have felt the same if the partner had been female," stressing that genuine solidarity and affection are key.<
