Actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who co-starred with Will Smith in the film King Richard, has come out strongly in defense of Will Smith over the 2022 Oscar controversy in which he assaulted someone.
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor recently appeared on the podcast The Daily Beast's Obsessed and vigorously supported Will Smith (57) while unleashing harsh criticism at comedian Chris Rock (61), who was involved in the incident.
On the podcast, she asserted, "I know Will Smith wanted to protect his wife, and I am still on his side." She added, "I do not believe freedom of expression must unconditionally protect people who are rude and hurtful. Especially if they are causing harm to others," delivering sharp words aimed at Chris Rock.
Earlier, at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, when Chris Rock, who was hosting, made a joke about the hairstyle of Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from hair loss, Will Smith ran onto the stage and slapped him, shocking the world.
Ellis-Taylor, who was nominated for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Will Smith's wife in King Richard, which was also nominated for best picture, did not spare praise for Will Smith's usual character.
She said, "Will Smith is the most attentive person among the actors I have worked with," and added, "On set, he never tolerated anyone — including extras — being discriminated against or treated poorly. It is rare to find an actor with that kind of character. I always feel deep affection and respect for him."
Meanwhile, as a result of the incident, Will Smith voluntarily resigned his membership from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and received a severe sanction banning him from attending the Academy Awards and all related events for the next 10 years.
