Singer and TV personality Ayumi said that the debut of "Sugar" almost fell through, causing surprise.
On the 15th, MBN's Dongchimi featured candid conversations among celebrity panelists under the theme "Are you not going to lose weight?"
That day Ayumi recalled, "I came to Korea when I was in middle school. I discovered Korea's baekseolgi and gained more than 10kg," and "decisively, after discovering tteokbokki I gained even more weight."
She said that before Sugar's debut she was even told to go back to Japan if she didn't lose weight. Ayumi said, "In Japan there is no rice cake that has the texture of Korean rice cakes while having a sweet taste. I used to have a body type that didn't gain weight, but after discovering rice cakes I gained a lot of weight."
"I had to debut as an idol but I had reached 60kg, so I really resolved to diet. I broke up with rice cakes," she recalled. "There was an elementary school in front of the dorm. As soon as I woke up in the morning I ran 30 laps around the playground. I exercised really hard."
Ayumi continued, "I started to lose weight. Other members Hwang Jung-eum, Park Soo-jin and Yook Hye-seung were so slim and pretty that I alone was round. People said your face is round so you should lose weight. I didn't want to hear things like that," she lamented.
Ayumi confessed, "I wanted to be told I was pretty like the other members, but they only said I was cute. Can't you call a pig cute too? I wanted to hear that I'm pretty rather than just cute."
The cast complimented her, saying, "You were so cute," and "Your round face and chubby cheeks were charming." But Ayumi straightened her face and joked, "The word 'cute' has too wide a spectrum. Isn't that something you could say about a pig?" which drew laughter.
Meanwhile, Ayumi debuted in Korea in 2002 as a member of the South Korean idol group Sugar.
