Chinese-speaking actress Wang Zhaoxuan expressed her convictions about the use of her AI likeness rights.
On the 16th (local time), Taiwanese media ETtoday reported that Wang Zhaoxuan recently, 22 years after her retirement, allowed the use of her likeness from her prime in her 20s and 30s to create an AI digital human for a popular online game.
In relation to this, Wang Zhaoxuan attended a game user convention held in Guangzhou, China, on the 15th and defended her permission for AI likeness use, saying, "We should use AI, not be used by AI."
Regarding the mixed external reactions and controversies about recreating her past appearance with AI, she said, "A new world must necessarily have new things. The world of the past was fine, but it too will soon face the basic foundations of the new world."
She also expressed a positive view about allowing her likeness to be used to create AI, saying, "I think it gives young people the opportunity to create something. It is creating things for progress and the future, and generating ideas. In any case, I think this is a beautiful thing."
However, Wang Zhaoxuan emphasized, "We should use AI, not be used by AI," and explained, "I think that all young people, or the thoughts they hold in their hearts themselves, are the true AI, and the AI we see with our eyes is not the real thing. Because these AIs are also created from within your hearts, the most important thing is what that AI in your heart actually is."
Through this collaboration, Wang Zhaoxuan appeared in the short film "Cheon-yeong" via an AI avatar, recreating the dazzling beauty of her prime when she transformed into the fox spirit (Hoxian), and a game-exclusive NPC and costumes were also released.
Born in Taiwan and gaining great popularity through appearances in many Hong Kong films, Wang Zhaoxuan was especially beloved domestically for playing the lead character Xiao Qian in A Chinese Ghost Story, but she retired in 2002.
