U.S. singer and actress Selena Gomez has been sued on fraud charges.
Recently, according to a report by the U.S. media outlet The New York Times, investors filed a lawsuit seeking damages against Selena Gomez and her mother, who co-founded the company with her.
Wondermind was founded in 2021 to help the public more easily access mental health resources. However, in this lawsuit investors claim the Wondermind team misrepresented the media company's development direction and leadership structure.
According to the complaint, Gomez signed a contract saying she would actively grow the company as chief marketing officer, but later ignored that agreement. The plaintiffs also alleged that Wondermind claimed to have partnerships with Fidelity and JP Morgan to provide mental health services to those companies' employees, but that was a "nonexistent fact." The complaint states that promised celebrity profiles, the "groundbreaking app" launch, and advertising contracts were all canceled.
Investors also said, "None of the founders, executives or directors gave investors a single explanation," and that they only learned of Wondermind's financial and operational turmoil through an article published last year in The Cut. The exposé at the time reported that Gomez was distancing herself from the company and described the awkward termination process of CEO Daniela Pearson.
In this regard, Selena Gomez's lawyer told the U.S. media outlet People, "There is absolutely no factual or legal basis for allegations that Selena Gomez engaged in so‑called 'fraud' or any other illegal conduct in any way."
He added, "We will vigorously defend against these false allegations and will file a motion to dismiss the baseless claims against Gomez."
