'A Bona fide Killer' Kong Hyojin completed a breath-taking ending as she risked being exposed to her husband Jung Jun-won during a casino infiltration operation. Ratings also continued to rise, breaking its own record.
On the 14th, episode 5 of MBC's Fri-Sat drama 'A Bona fide Killer' (planned by Kwon Seong-chang, written by Kim Eun-hee, directed by Yoon Jong-ho and Kim Ji-hun) aired, unfolding a variety of stories from Yoo Bo-na (played by Kong Hyojin)'s in-law memorial day commotion to Dorumi Electronics sales team 3's casino operation targeting the new mark Tak Jong-gu (played by Kim Min-jun).
The broadcast recorded 9.8% nationwide households and 9.5% in the Seoul metropolitan area based on Nielsen Korea, setting its highest ratings to date. In particular, the scene where Ki Young-do (played by Moo Jin-seong) fails to secure a VIP ticket and Yoo Bo-na jumps into the casino herself spiked to a peak rating of 11.4%.
The 20-54 key demographic rating, a core indicator of channel competitiveness, also recorded 3.8%, placing the program first among all shows aired that day. It achieved a "triple crown," ranking first among all Friday programs in the Seoul metropolitan area, nationwide households and the 20-54 rating.
That day, Kwon Tae-seong (played by Jung Jun-won) had a nightmare in which he was bound and threatened in the mountains, heightening curiosity about his mysterious past. Yoo Bo-na discovered a bug on a doll sent by her Russian friend Seulgi and issued a chilling warning, saying, "If you do this one more time, I'll fry you with lightning." As different dangers cast shadows over the seemingly ordinary couple's daily life, the tension rose.
Dorumi Electronics sales team 3's new target was Tak Jong-gu, the youngest son of a royal family with a member of the National Assembly as his father and a chaebol lineage mother. He had committed various crimes against women but, despite being sentenced to two years of suspended imprisonment, he continued to frequent casinos.
Yoo Bo-na said, "If possible, I hope to hit a jackpot on the meeting day. May the most glorious day be his memorial day," showing a murderous resolve toward the target. But she soon received a call from her mother-in-law Ok Seon-ja (played by Cha Mi Kyeong), recalled her in-law memorial day and displayed a twist of charm alternating between killer and everyday housewife.
Kwon Tae-seong caught suspicious circumstances while covering the fall accident of Kang Young-ho (played by Jeon Chi-hwa) of Gaechun Construction. Although the accident appeared to have been caused by Kang Young-ho's negligence, he suspected it when Chairman Cheon Seong-gil (played by Kim Jong-gu) personally stepped in to provide compensation. He also confirmed that Kang Young-ho usually did not drink and that his wife had worked at Cheon Seong-gil's house, deepening suspicions surrounding the accident.
Meanwhile, Kwon Tae-seong was caught by Ok Seon-ja while doing the dishes on behalf of Yoo Bo-na, who had exhausted herself preparing for the memorial. Ok Seon-ja pressed him, mentioning Yoo Bo-na's family history, and Kwon Tae-seong firmly replied, "Just as I am a precious son to my mother, this person is my precious wife."
In the end, an enraged Ok Seon-ja even threw food, turning the house into chaos. Yoo Bo-na, watching the scene, was swept by complex emotions in front of a family she had never known. On top of that, their daughter Kwon Yul (played by Hwang Bom-i) suddenly disappeared from the playground. Kwon Se-a (played by Lee Eunsaem) recalled that she had told Kwon Yul she would have to "die" to go to heaven, and was consumed by guilt.
Yoo Bo-na found Kwon Yul on the apartment roof watching a plane, and upon hearing her daughter's words, "I was going to take you on a plane. Mom is an orphan," they cried together and embraced. The tender mother-daughter moment moved viewers.
Afterward, the family decided to cancel the memorial by vote, and with Ok Seon-ja's agreement the conflict was warmly resolved. Returning to sales team 3's operation, the casino infiltration mission to deal with Tak Jong-gu began. To enter the 22nd-floor VIP room where Tak Jong-gu was, Ki Young-do mobilized special glasses that increase win probability to secure a VIP ticket. The final goal was for Yoo Bo-na to lure Tak Jong-gu out of the casino and take the shot.
But when Moon Da-rae (played by Moon Seung-yu) unexpectedly appeared, the operation started to go awry. While Ki Young-do was smoothly continuing the casino game, the intruding Moon Da-rae taunted, "This is a hill to win even if you can't eat. Is this your first time gambling?" Ultimately she beat Ki Young-do and got the VIP ticket.
When the plan fell apart, Yoo Bo-na headed to the casino herself. There, Kwon Tae-seong, who had followed Cheon Seong-gil's car, was struggling with security guards.
The two people, who had come to the casino for different purposes, narrowly brushed past each other. It was the moment when tension peaked over whether Yoo Bo-na could complete the mission without her husband's eyes catching her. Especially as the likelihood increased that Kwon Tae-seong would notice Yoo Bo-na's identity, the risk of the 'Kingfisher' being exposed hung over the ending of episode 5, exploding curiosity about the next story.
