Comedian Jang Dong-min mentioned the harsh disciplinary culture of KBS' Gag Concert.
Tonight (13th) at 10 p.m., MBC's Where is My Home (directed by Jeong Da-hee, Nam You Joung, Jang Hyo-jong, Kim Yoo-jin/hereafter "Where is My Home") will feature house visits for children.
On this episode they visit the "dream houses" that children of different age groups imagine. The house visits feature the legendary KBS comedian recruitment class 19 trio: "father of many children" Jang Dong-min and Hong In-kyu, and alter ego master "single woman" Kang Yu-mi. The three will meticulously inspect spaces from the children's perspective and will also showcase the seamless rapport and delightful chemistry befitting classmates from the 19th class.
During the visits, unusual stories about the "discipline" in the comedy and modeling worlds unfold, drawing attention.
Jang Dong-min recalled his time in the KBS comedian recruitment class 19, saying that even right after being scolded by seniors for being called together, he and his classmates still came up with ideas, prompting admiration with "truly the golden class." In response, Joo Woo-jae recalled the discipline culture of the modeling world and revealed the story of his first meeting with actor Byeon Woo-seok. When Byeon Woo-seok's name came up, the cast's attention immediately turned to him, and when questions followed, Joo Woo-jae reacted in disbelief, asking, "Don't you have any interest in me?" At one point Hong In-kyu even asked for Byeon Woo-seok's autograph to give to his wife, sending the set into laughter.
They then visit the home of kids influencer "Yangiro," who recorded 100 million views. Iro personally guides the tour of her home, offering a special house visit that reveals an outdoor space where children can run freely, Iro's uniquely styled room, and a private bathroom, capturing the cast's attention. Watching the youngest stylist Iro's performance, Yang Se-chan jokingly suggests making her a permanent stylist, eliciting laughter. It raises curiosity about what a "dream house" seen through a child's eyes will look like.
They also look for a large apartment complex in Mok-dong, Korea's representative education district, close to cram schools. It offers proximity to renowned school districts and academies, and the interior has been remodeled to suit a child's lifestyle. Expectations are high for what a Mok-dong home equipped with educational environments and child-tailored spaces will look like.
Finally, the three visit a super-tall mixed-use residential and commercial building located in the same Mok-dong, perched above a department store. It attracts interest as a "house producing prestigious university students," with the eldest having entered Seoul National University dental school and the second having gone to study in the United States. Hong In-kyu, who has a son in his senior year of high school, stroked a Seoul National University dental school graduation plaque, saying he would take some of its good fortune, and Jang Dong-min, who has a daughter, also chimed in as if to share the luck of acceptance, resonating with parents who have children.
Meanwhile, Jang Dong-min is famous as the person who eliminated the abusive disciplinary culture of KBS' Gag Concert after the 19th class.
In 2023 on the Contents Production CONSO channel, Jang Dong-min said, "After the recording ends we all gather that same day and talk, and then one class would leave at a time. The top class would say one thing and leave, then the next class would say one thing and leave. It continued that way until the very last class."
He confessed that the Gag Concert gathering culture met three times a week, and after recordings they always gathered on the roof, and that when he tried to eliminate the disciplinary culture he was once assaulted by a senior in front of his juniors.
When asked, "Jang Dong-min eliminated the disciplinary culture in the 19th class—did it actually disappear?" 29th class member Im Jong-hyeok said, "It almost completely disappeared, but as each class came down there was a 'don't listen to that' for each class," adding, "After Jang Dong-min left, the 20th class senior said, 'Don't listen to that Jang Dong-min thing,' then the next was 'Don't listen to that Yoo Min-sang thing,' and so on. Eventually no one listened. It became like a catchphrase."
