Actor Lee Chaeyoung's exchange with an internet user over her review of the film "Hope" has drawn attention.
Recently, content of a conversation between Lee Chaeyoung and an internet user about "Hope" that took place via DM (direct message) was revealed on online communities and social media.
Earlier, Lee Chaeyoung had left a positive review after watching "Hope." In response, an internet user sent a DM saying, "Would you have praised this film sincerely even if the naming of Na Hong-jin wasn't attached? I'm truly curious," and Lee Chaeyoung replied, "I watched it and thought that way even without the naming of Na Hong-jin. If you consider it with the naming of Na Hong-jin in mind, the score might not come out as well, but please just think of it as a movie and watch it. Please think of it as if some Korean director we don't know made the film and watch it."
The internet user asked specifically about the film's setting and plausibility, and Lee Chaeyoung said, "I didn't give a high score just because aliens appeared. I also didn't highly rate it because of the reason for collaborating with the aliens or because there is a gimmick where an actor transforms from human form," and added, "Korea also has films with technology not inferior to foreign films, so it's surprisingly impressive," mentioning the reasons she praised the film and its technical completeness.
However, the internet user rebutted by mentioning scenes in the film and the characters' actions. In response to the claim that the film's context and plausibility were lacking, Lee Chaeyoung said, "As you said, tastes differ," and added, "A budget of 70 billion won is really an absurdly small amount compared to that. The fact that they achieved this level of quality with that small amount is admirable. I think it's really remarkable that they unfolded this narrative with the guts of having no sequel plans."
Still, the internet user cited reactions from an online community and said, "It's absurd to try to follow Hollywood with 70 billion won, but when 'D-War' came out in the past, the critics who slammed it to death are now saying about 'Hope' that this is a monumental development, which is a bit astonishing," and Lee Chaeyoung concluded the exchange by saying, "Don't look too much at online communities. Please view it with a positive eye rather than criticism. I liked it."
However, the internet user who released the conversation said they were disappointed in Lee Chaeyoung and mentioned her filmography. In response, internet users questioned whether Lee Chaeyoung should be criticized even down to her filmography when she simply shared an honest impression and interpretation of the work she watched. Many supported Lee Chaeyoung, noting that she did not raise her voice or behave in that way while exchanging opinions with the internet user, and that people can like or dislike a work, but that does not warrant criticism.
