Actor Han Chae-rin made a perfect transformation from 'A Bona fide Killer' into a fresh, early-career reporter, making an impression from her first appearance. She showed steady acting skills by delicately portraying the character's diverse facets, from bold passion to vulnerable moments when she felt deflated.
Han Chae-rin plays Gu Hae-na, a rookie reporter and junior to social affairs reporter Kwon Tae-seong (Jung Jun-won) of Not Today, in MBC's Friday-Saturday drama A Bona fide Killer and is active in the role. Gu Hae-na is an early-career professional with the passion and boldness to want to do everything well, and she struggles to gain recognition from her mentor.
From her first appearance, Han Chae-rin naturally completed the character of Gu Hae-na with a fresh visual and bright energy. From the moment she greets loudly with "Hello!" as soon as she arrives at work to running through rough reporting scenes and finishing the tasks she is assigned, she fully captured the rookie reporter's distinctive boldness and passion.
In particular, Han Chae-rin did not portray Gu Hae-na as only a bright and bold character. While showing the smart, capable traits of an MZ rookie reporter, she also added polite and accommodating manners to create a realistic early-career persona. Though still lacking experience, her eagerness to learn and thirst for her mentor's approval drew viewers' support naturally.
By contrast, Gu Hae-na's fragile interior was revealed when she quickly lost confidence after Kwon Tae-seong's cutting remark. She prepared as many as six drinks for their first meeting but was rejected, and the scene in which she bows her head after hearing the realistic advice that "a reporter's job is above all to appeal and prove oneself through reporting and articles" fully conveyed the awkward heart of a rookie reporter.
But that defeatist feeling lasted only briefly. Gu Hae-na regained her characteristic energy when she went out to the reporting scene. Even in chaotic situations she kept holding out her microphone to secure interviews, and she showed a surprising charm by eagerly responding to the reporting leads Kwon Tae-seong offered, showing she would take initiative more than anyone.
In this process, Han Chae-rin connected Gu Hae-na's emotional line naturally by finely controlling facial expressions, tone, and gestures instead of exaggerated acting. She added realism to the character by balancedly expressing a rookie's excitement and nerves at starting work, the desire to be recognized by her mentor, and an unusually proactive passion when it comes to the job.
Starting around episodes 3–4 of A Bona fide Killer, in which Han Chae-rin first appeared, the duo investigations of Kwon Tae-seong and Gu Hae-na began in earnest, and viewers are anticipating Gu Hae-na's growth story as she gains experience in the field. Han Chae-rin, who delivered a passionate performance as Gu Hae-na from her first appearance, raises interest in how she will develop the character.
