'Odyssey' director Christopher Nolan drew laughs with a candid remark about shooting on expensive IMAX film.
On the 8th, the tvN entertainment show You Quiz on the Block channel uploaded a short video titled 'What happens if you flub a take with 640km of IMAX film?'
Earlier, regarding behind-the-scenes of the grueling new film Odyssey, Yu Jae-seok asked, "There are rumors saying this shoot was 'as hard as filming seven movies at once' — did the director warn you that it would be tough?" Matt Damon said, "When we first met, the director told me something. After discussing the script, near the end of the meeting the director very firmly said, 'This movie is really going to be hard.' I tried to brush it off thinking, 'Come on, have I not shot a few before?' but the director reiterated, 'No, it will really be hard.' And the director kept that promise," he said, drawing laughter.
Director Christopher Nolan acknowledged, "I expected it would be extremely grueling and warned Matt in advance, but honestly I could not have imagined it would be this hard. I found myself staring at Matt and had to confess, 'Wow, this really is a hard movie,'" and said he also suffered. Pursuing 'zero CG,' director Christopher Nolan is known for creating and filming most situations to feel real.
Yu Jae-seok asked, "In particular, I've heard Odyssey is the first commercial film to shoot every scene on 70mm IMAX film. I'd like to ask if there's a reason you insist on IMAX film."
Director Christopher Nolan answered, "The human eye captures the colors and fine details of objects as they appear. So if you want to take the audience into the middle of the film's scene and make them feel like they are standing with Odysseus on a battered ship, I think there is no more perfect format than this. By showing the clearest, sharpest images, it makes one physically sense the air, smell, touch and even taste of that place."
Yu Jae-seok asked, "Sorry to keep talking about costs, but I've heard IMAX film is expensive. From the director's perspective, do you ever feel inwardly angry when actors flub takes?" Director Christopher Nolan laughed, "Honestly, yes, I do get angry inside sometimes." Matt Damon added, "Every week the bills piled up," and joked, "Just kidding. If it were true, I'd be broke," eliciting laughter.
The episode of You Quiz featuring world-renowned director Christopher Nolan and Hollywood A-list actor Matt Damon will air on the 12th.
