James Haven, the brother of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and also an actor, has come out as gay. It comes about a year after his divorce from his wife, The Real L Word cast member Romi Imbelli.
On the 6th, U.S. entertainment outlet Page Six reported that Haven, 53, appeared on Romi Imbelli's Substack live broadcast and revealed his sexual orientation. The two married on Aug. 2024 but separated 15 days after the wedding, and completed annulment proceedings in Mar. 2025.
That day Haven said he had felt different from others since childhood. He said, I was completely obsessed with Disney princesses when I was young, and that at the time he did not have the language to explain his feelings.
He continued, I could not explain why, but I only knew that it made me feel more like myself, and it was not that I was trying to be someone else. It was about letting a part of me that had always been there shine.
Haven explained, Coming out is not about becoming a new person, but about allowing the person who has been there from the beginning to be met by others.
He also expressed a desire for his family and those around him to accept his sexual orientation. The son of actor Jon Voight, he said, I hope family and others choose love over fear, understanding over judgment, and consolidation over the beliefs that have separated us.
He added, Beyond labels, I hope people see me as someone with the same heart, laughter and soul I have always had.
By Haven's side was his ex-wife Imbelli. Imbelli confessed that she had somewhat suspected her husband might be gay.
Imbelli said, I did not want to see it. I did not want to believe it, and I knew, and I wanted to support and love you, but the moment I believed it I felt like I would lose you in that sense, so I did not want to believe it.
She explained that in her heart there was a struggle between supporting and loving you and having to break the lie you know.
Still, Imbelli emphasized that her relationship with Haven was not over. She said, You will remain my companion in life, and we will live life together. You are not just a close friend of mine. You are my love. And you are just gay.
Meanwhile, Haven and Imbelli quietly held a wedding in Aug. 2024 in Laguna Beach, California, with only close family in attendance. At the time, Haven's father, actor Jon Voight, was also reportedly in attendance. Angelina Jolie was reported not to have attended the wedding.
Imbelli was previously married to musician Dusty Ray and chef Charles Imbelli, and she has a daughter with Charles Imbelli.
