The movie "Hope" faced a crisis as its reservation rate plunged three weeks after release.
On the 6th, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) integrated box office computer network, the movie "Hope" (writer-director Na Hong-jin, produced by Forged Films, co-produced by Plus M Entertainment·West World Co., distributed by Plus M Entertainment) drew 29,925 viewers in one day the previous day, bringing its cumulative audience to 4,265,623.
This is markedly lower than the 291,359 recorded by "Odyssey" (director Christopher Nolan, imported/distributed by Universal Pictures), released on the 5th (cumulative audience 293,726), and the 273,994 recorded by "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" (director Destin Cretton, distributed by Sony Pictures) (cumulative audience 4,408,155).
In addition, the children-targeted film "Love's Heartsping: the legend of the whale jewel" (director Kim Soo-hoon, provided/produced by S A M G Entertainment Co., distributed by By4M Studio Co.) recorded a daily audience of 73,032 (cumulative audience 100,442), pushing "Hope" down to fourth place at the box office overnight.
Real-time reservation rate as of 9:32 a.m. on the 6th was 2.5% (31,111 people), far below "Odyssey" (47.5%, 582,792) and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" (37.2%, 419,501) and less than half of "Love's Heartsping: the legend of the whale jewel" (8.6%, 104,953). In addition, "OK! MADAM 2" (director Lee Cheol-ha, provided by CGV Pictures, OAL, distributed by CGV Pictures, produced by OAL), scheduled to open on the 12th, edged up to 2.5% (31,140), dropping "Hope" to fifth place in reservations.
"Hope" begins with Beom-seok (Hwang Jung-min), the head of the Hopo Port branch office located in the demilitarized zone, hearing from local youths that a tiger has appeared; as the whole village goes on alert, he encounters an unbelievable reality. After opening on the 15th of last month, it held the box office number one spot for two consecutive weeks and surpassed 4 million viewers on the 2nd, but subsequent consecutive competing releases and a personal life issue involving lead actor Hwang Jung-min combined as adverse factors, leading to a gradual decline.
In particular, "Hope" is a massive project with total production costs exceeding 70 billion won, and the breakeven point is estimated to be in the 7 million viewer range. Against this backdrop, attention is focused on whether "Hope," which is scheduled to open in North America on Sept. 9, can overcome its box office slump and refresh its momentum.
