Actress Moon Hee-kyung meets global viewers through the Korea·Taiwan co-produced period drama Goodbye 1987 (再見1987).
Goodbye 1987 is a period drama co-produced by Taiwan Public Television Service (PTS) Taiwanese-language channel and Korea, portraying the lives and generational conflicts of two families across half a century set in Taiwan and Korea. It depicts major events in modern East Asian history, from the 1940s Japanese colonial period and the Kuomintang migration to Taiwan, to the 1950 Korean War, the 1960s Taiwan martial law period and Korea's April 19 Revolution.
In the drama Moon Hee-kyung plays Kim Eun-suk, taking responsibility for the middle-aged version of the character played by Iyoo. She is expected to firmly lead the drama's center by portraying the complex emotions of a character who quietly endures life amid the whirlwinds of the times with deep, nuanced acting.
She contributes to the project not only through acting but also with music. Moon Hee-kyung participates in the Goodbye 1987 OST and presents a special collaboration with a Taiwanese female singer. This musical collaboration across borders is expected to further enrich the meaning of the Korea·Taiwan co-production.
Moon Hee-kyung said the Taiwanese production team "was astonishingly meticulous in all preparations. Because it is a period drama, costumes had to be thoroughly verified, and the costumes were all brought from Taiwan to Korea so actors could do fittings themselves before filming."
She added that "the Taiwanese production staff spoke a little Korean. They said they learned Korean by watching Korean dramas, and at that moment I once again realized the stature of K-dramas," she said.
Meanwhile, Goodbye 1987 recently held a special screening at the Taipei Film Festival and will premiere on the Taiwan Public Television Service (PTS) Taiwanese-language channel on the 30th. Domestic release is currently under discussion regarding distribution platforms.
