'A Trap Called Desire' director Lee Dae-kyung and writer Koo Ji-won expressed confidence that the series offers a differentiated appeal unlike existing revenge dramas.
The new KBS 2TV daily drama A Trap Called Desire (directed by Lee Dae-kyung and Jung Kwang-soo, written by Koo Ji-won), which premieres on the 10th at 7:50 p.m., is a fate-restoration revenge drama about a woman who, falsely accused of murder and having lost everything, fights against enormous desire to reclaim her life.
Director Lee Dae-kyung, who directed the series, recalled when he first encountered the work and said, "I found the diverse desires of the characters and the way those desires become entangled with each other very interesting," and added, "I am glad to be directing a work with good actors, staff and a solid script."
He then cited "desire," "the moment one crosses the line" and "universality" as the core keywords that run through the work. He said, "I wanted to portray in dense detail the process in which the characters' desires gradually cross the line while conveying a range of emotions such as empathy, anger, compassion and love," and explained, "A Trap Called Desire is ultimately a story about characters. I focused most on looking deeply into the characters' inner lives and delicately capturing the actors' performances."
Writer Koo Ji-won emphasized that A Trap Called Desire is a work with a texture different from a simple moralistic revenge drama. He said, "A Trap Called Desire does not remain only a story of a victim taking revenge on a perpetrator," and added, "Through the process by which the fates of the real and the fake are reversed by one person's obsessive desire, I wanted to portray how far humans can become cruel."
In particular, writer Koo said, "In A Trap Called Desire, the villain does not get swept up in events but directly devises the plan, moves all the characters and drives the plot," and added, "With Joo Mi-ran's meticulous ambition at the center, Eun-seol and Seok-jin's first love and Hae-ra's obsession interlock, producing tense developments each episode."
Director Lee Dae-kyung said, "Actor Jang Seo-hee is an icon-like performer who needs no explanation. I thought she could most convincingly portray the character Miran," and "Actor Jeon Hye-won also has excellent acting skills and her own individuality. I focused on casting actors with different images and acting tones so that characters with various desires could come alive." Writer Koo Ji-won said, "The twisted ambition of Joo Mi-ran and the pursuit of truth by Go Eun-seol, completed by Jang Seo-hee and Jeon Hye-won's powerful acting ensemble, will be A Trap Called Desire's greatest weapon," expressing confidence.
Finally, director Lee and writer Koo said, "A Trap Called Desire is a work in which not a single character from lead to bit part is wasted. I hope it becomes a drama that retains the pleasure of watching characters," and added, "I hope the drama will be remembered as an 'life revenge melodrama' that leaves a heavy aftertaste in the heart. I hope viewers will cry and feel anger with the characters every night and ultimately share the exhilaration and consolation when the truth triumphs. Even if trapped in an unjust reality, I want to convey the message that what ultimately lifts people up are love and will," as they looked forward to meeting viewers.
