Director Christopher Nolan, visiting Korea for the first time, will appear on terrestrial news today (4th).
The world-renowned master Christopher Nolan, who visited Korea ahead of the release of the film "Odyssey," appeared on SBS' News Hunters' and revealed his special affection for Korean audiences and a special episode with director Park Chan-wook.
Nolan visited the SBS building in Mok-dong on the 3rd and conducted an exclusive interview with News Hunters. When fans said they were worried because he was wearing a jacket despite the extreme heat, Nolan began the interview with a witty greeting, saying, "I came via China and India so I'm used to the heat," and "at least I'm not wearing a tie like the anchor, so that's a relief."
Nolan said he had longed to visit Korea for years. He mentioned the enthusiastic reaction Korean audiences showed during the release of Interstellar and said, "From that moment I wanted to come to Korea in person to meet people and confirm the enthusiasm, but I hadn't had the opportunity until this work."
He also revealed the meeting with director Park Chan-wook that took place during this visit. Nolan said, "When I said I didn't know when asked about his next project, Park told me, 'Take a vacation, but don't rest too long so you can work on your next film,'" and laughed, saying, "Honestly, hearing that made me more tired." He added, "Park is a master I have long admired, and it is always interesting to see Korean creators changing the currents of world culture." The two masters met while appearing on a talk program hosted by Cine21 on the 3rd.
About the new film "Odyssey," he emphasized that it was a work that ran through his entire career. Nolan said, "Reading the ancient text again, I was surprised to find that themes and story models that have guided my entire career, not only Interstellar but also the Dark Knight series and Tenet, are contained in the original."
Regarding the background of the modern adaptation of ancient mythology, he said, "The 'law of Zeus (xenia)' that appears in the original is an ancient norm to warmly respect and treat strangers," and added, "I realized this is ultimately the principle of 'mutual respect' that upholds modern civilization, and I wanted to convey the message that when it is ignored, we put ourselves in danger."
Nolan also candidly talked about why he finally challenged shooting entirely in IMAX, a dream since he was 16, and about his future plans. After the interview, he even left a special greeting for SBS viewers by signing his autograph toward the camera lens.
