Broadcaster Lee Ji Hye erupted in anger at the brutality of the "Sanggye-dong three family murder and arson case," shrouded in mystery for 20 years.
The 153rd episode of KBS 2TV variety program "Forensic Investigation Team: Smoking Gun" (hereinafter "Smoking Gun"), airing on the 4th at 9:45 p.m., will delve deeply into the truth of the "Sanggye three family murder and arson case," which shocked the entire nation yet remains unsolved.
The tragedy began at about 1:30 a.m. on July 13, 2002. A 119 report was received that an unexplained fire had broken out in a two-story dwelling in Sanggye-dong, Seoul. After extinguishing the fire and entering the master bedroom, firefighters witnessed a horrific scene: a 35-year-old mother and her two young sons, ages 10 and 6, were found dead. Investigators concluded that someone had brutally killed the three family members and intentionally set the fire to destroy evidence. However, the investigation ran into difficulties because there were no traces of the perpetrator at the scene.
Because the victims were found in the master bedroom, where they should have been safest, investigators judged it highly likely the perpetrator was known to them. The investigative team and later the long-term unsolved case unit launched a major reinvestigation and continued questioning people around the victims, but they failed to find decisive evidence to identify the perpetrator, and the case remained unsolved even 20 years later.
At a recent recording, cast members who learned the full story of the case were horrified. Ahn Hyun-mo shuddered, saying the way the perpetrator killed the mother and two sons was very cruel, and Lee Ji Hye raged that the perpetrator's actions were truly "an outrage against humanity." She added that it was extremely frustrating that although there is a prime suspect, an alibi prevents arrest, and she could not continue speaking.
On that broadcast, top experts will gather to unravel clues to the case. Former head of the long-term unsolved cases unit in the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Kang Yoon-seok, will appear to reconstruct the case timeline and vivid investigation records. Park Geun-woo, president of an insurance adjuster firm, will join to sharply point out the victims' insurance enrollment details and chilling signs of insurance fraud by a suspect behind the case. In addition, Seo Moon-soo-cheol, head of the fire investigation team in the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency's forensic division, is said to have scientifically analyzed the fire scene and raised the possibility of "delayed combustion," leaving the studio in stunned silence.
