The film Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Spider-Man 4), which surpassed 3 million viewers in South Korea in just five days after its domestic release amid a fierce box office storm, has completely taken over North American theaters. On its opening day it set an all-time record by surpassing Avengers: Endgame in opening-day revenue.
According to Box Office Mojo on the 3rd, the film Spider-Man: Brand New Day (director Destin Cretton) earned explosive revenue of about $169.3 million (about 24.2 billion won) in a single day on its North American opening day, July 31. This easily toppled the record previously held for highest opening-day revenue by Avengers: Endgame (about $157.46 million). At the same time, it set the highest opening-day revenue in the Spider-Man series, writing a completely new box office history for Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day tells the story of Peter Parker, who was erased from everyone's memory after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, confronting a mysterious enemy who remembers his identity, gaining uncontrollable power from DNA mutation and falling into deep turmoil. It is a blockbuster action film of epic proportions in which he once again faces a massive threat to protect those he cares about.
Alongside its astonishing box office performance, major North American outlets have showered it with praise. "The best live-action Spider-Man yet" (Los Angeles Times), "the best Spider-Man film in 20 years" (Independent), "one of the series' greatest works. It's surprising, cool and moving" (The Wrap) — acclaim for the Spider-Man series returning after four years kept coming.
Praise also poured in for the upgraded, spectacular action: "action sequences that show the series at its best" (Independent), "battles and chases of superheroes presented from new angles" (AV Club), "the first 20 minutes contain scenes of a quality not seen in previous superhero films" (EMPIRE). In addition, glowing reviews for lead actor Tom Holland — "he delivers the best performance yet. He excellently conveys the character's emotional anguish" (The Hollywood Reporter, TIME) — announced the birth of a well-made hero movie. Now reactions saying Spider-Man is Tom Holland rather than Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield are growing.
