The hyperrealism military comedy powerhouse 'New Recruit' returns with even stronger new faces. ENA's new Monday-Tuesday drama 'New Recruit 4: Sabotage' announced the arrival of special aces who will turn the Sinhwa unit upside down, foreshadowing the tension before the storm.
'New Recruit 4: Sabotage' (directed by Min Jin-gi·Jo Je-wook, written by Yoon Ki-young·Kim Dan) released today (30th) a second teaser video showing the Sinhwa unit transformed by the addition of new characters.
New Recruit is a hit that has received explosive love across generations and genders by portraying the story that unfolds when the unique "military spoon" New Recruit enlists in an army made up of all kinds of characters. In this season 4, corporal Park Min-seok (played by Kim Min-ho), whose promotion has deepened his worries, will once again update his life role as he becomes entangled with sergeant Choi Il-gu (played by Nam Tae-woo), who re-enlists (?), a mysterious new recruit, and the battalion commander who will bring a gust of change to the unit, depicting the dynamic second half of military life. Director Min Jin-gi, who pioneered the new genre called "mil-content," comedy master writer Yoon Ki-young, and writer Kim Dan, who led the success of season 1, have joined forces, raising expectations for the return of a well-made comedy.
In the unveiled second teaser video, an unusual atmosphere hanging over the Sinhwa unit catches attention. The long-rumored "elite" battalion commander Byun Hyuk-jin (played by Lee Hyun-gyun) has finally entered the unit. Park Min-seok's tense expression at the arrival of a new power figure foreshadows the upheaval that will sweep the unit.
The appearance of tightly disciplined new recruit Kim Hyun-wook (played by Lee Won-jung) is also striking. In particular, Moon Bit-na-ri (played by Kim Yo-han), who endured hardship as part of the so-called "trash line," shouts as if she had been waiting for the arrival of a successor, "Assemble under me, all of you," and launches into a spicy drill sergeant routine, provoking uncontrollable laughter. But the welcoming of the new ace is short-lived, as someone's ominous line, "This is going to get tough," hints that another fierce upheaval will hit the Sinhwa unit, amplifying curiosity.
This season's key viewing point is the synergy between the seasoned experience of long-serving seniors and the distinctive new faces. Kim Min-ho has entered the respectable senior line but once again becomes Park Min-seok, a corporal who will undergo a challenging second-half military life squeezed between the new battalion commander and the hyperalert new recruit, updating his career-defining role.
Also adding to the welcome are Kim Dong-jun as the fully reborn "mil-star" Jeon Se-gye, Oh Dae-Hwan as company commander Jo Baek-ho at a crossroads of a major decision, and Nam Tae-woo as Choi Il-gu, who returned as the youngest sergeant from the final posting. Newcomer Lee Hyun-gyun transforms into battalion commander "Byun Hyuk-jin," who emphasizes change and innovation, and Lee Won-jung becomes the inscrutable ace new recruit "Kim Hyun-wook," expected to inject fresh energy into the drama.
The production team said, "With two aces of different temperaments newly joining the Sinhwa unit, an alert sounds for Park Min-seok's previously peaceful corporal life," adding, "Please look forward to a more dynamic second-half military life as new characters appear in the familiar barracks."
'New Recruit 4: Sabotage' will premiere on Monday, Aug. 24, at 10 p.m. on ENA and will also meet global viewers through KT Jini TV and TVING.
