Coupang Play's new series The Affair Was Just The Beginning (hereafter The Affair Was Just The Beginning) is a black comedy of chained collisions in which a popular influencer couple who have sold the image of a happy family and a neighboring doctor couple embroiled in a mudslinging divorce lawsuit become entangled in an unbearable secret that makes even an affair seem trivial.
The released stills capture the unpredictable incidents that will storm from the start and the tense relationships of the four protagonists, drawing attention. First, the scene of Kyung-hee's (Kim Hye-soo) family, who have moved into an upscale dwelling and seem drenched in happiness as if they own the world, catches the eye. Self-made influencer Kyung-hee and her younger-husband Jaehong (Kim Ji-hun), who is smiling affectionately at her side, hint at their perfectly packaged daily life.
By contrast, the atmosphere at the neighboring house of Su-jeong (Cho Yeojeong) is completely different. Elegant dermatologist Su-jeong is crying as if the world has collapsed, and her ex-husband Boseong (Kim Jae-cheol) is having an intimate conversation with someone in the dark, provoking curiosity about the hidden story behind the two continuing their mudslinging divorce lawsuit.
From the moment the two neighbors with completely opposite temperatures meet, the once-perfect life of Kyung-hee's family begins to unravel little by little. This strange change extends to Kyung-hee's daughter Yeji and Su-jeong's daughter Minseo, who are the same age. Questions deepen about what unexpected incident might befall Yeji and Minseo, who became instant best friends at their first meeting.
At a dinner that finally took place after much ordeal, the strange tension between Su-jeong and Jaehong raises the stakes to a fever pitch. With the relationship between the two, who become entangled in unexpected incidents every time they meet, already foreshadowed, Su-jeong's wary gaze as she secretly seeks someone to turn the tide of the divorce lawsuit draws viewers into a story that will run wildly and complexly.
Here, Jaehong, holding his daughter tightly and showing his complicated feelings, and Kyung-hee, who looks stunned as the happiness she thought would last forever is shaken in an instant, hint at an unimaginable incident that will befall them and sharply raise expectations for the release of episodes 1 and 2.
Meanwhile, at a recent production press conference, Kim Ji-hun said he chose the project because he was personally happy to be able to act with the senior Kim Hye-soo, whom he had long admired, saying he had watched her in many works since childhood and had felt a 'celebrity' vibe about her since he was little. He said he always felt she had a thousand faces when he watched her acting while growing up and acting, and that she looked great in any role, so he wanted to emulate her as an actor.
