Singer-songwriter Lee Seung-yoon served as the second guest of Melon's offline listening talk show 'THE SOUND' and shared a special musical rapport with fans.
On the afternoon of the 23rd, 100 fans selected based on activity metrics and thoughtful reviews on Melon were invited to the event held at Seongsuyul Music. With pop music critic Jung Min-jae hosting, attendees listened together to 14 tracks personally curated by Lee Seung-yoon and shared behind-the-scenes stories of the album from the closest distance.
'THE SOUND' is Melon's original music project designed to let fans experience music chosen directly by artists and the narratives contained within. The offline listening talk show was extended via live broadcast on the Melon app, and on the day of the event the 14 tracks selected by Lee Seung-yoon were published as a Melon playlist so users inside and outside the venue could continue listening to the same music.
A three-time winner at the 22nd Korean Music Awards, Lee Seung-yoon expressed special attachment to his full-length fourth album '0-jip', which he completed after as many as 10 years. Of the album, which includes a total of 29 songs including pre-debut tracks, he said, "This is an album I really wanted to complete for a very long time, and I still can't believe I actually made the album I wanted," expressing overwhelming emotion.
The event began with the first track 'Over the shadow' and continued with hidden stories behind the diverse included songs. Lee Seung-yoon described one song as "a song I made because I really wanted to put this rhythm in," conveying a diary-like feeling contained in the track, and regarding 'The 132nd resolution' he asked listeners to focus on the charm of small ensemble, saying it was "a song made only with guitar and my hands, layers of voice, the sound of a desk and the sound of a pen."
About 'The rebels,' which contains stories about relationships, he said, "Ultimately the line 'I want to understand, I want to be understood' is the core of this song," and regarding 'I'm not an astronomer' he introduced it as "a song made with the thought that even a pebble could be called a star," eliciting sympathy from the audience. For another included song, "In a universe larger than knowledge," he revealed the backstory: "I was getting to know the world, but why did I feel I knew less of it? I made it wondering when I would be able to understand these universes that lie beyond what we call knowledge," which drew attention.
In the latter part, songs beloved on live stages such as 'Gain warning' and 'Universe like something to drink' followed. Lee Seung-yoon referred to the lyric "There is more darkness between the stars" and explained it was "a song made with the intention of creating each person's own Milky Way," and critic Jung Min-jae marveled at the expression "Rain doesn't fall in straight lines but in circles," calling it "a genius lyric."
For the title track 'Tossing shell,' he revealed the creative background that it is "about how much the things deemed valuable are merely a facade," and they also watched the music video directed by Hobin on the large screen. He also shared the backstory that the song 'It won't exist,' which he first performed at a college song festival, carried the desire "from that time on to definitely remake this song."
The event concluded with 'Nonsense' and 'The moon is so pretty.' Regarding 'The moon is so pretty,' which he introduced as one of his 'death trilogy,' Lee Seung-yoon explained it was "a song that contains the idea that we should take good care of the feelings beside us at this very moment, essentially a motto of my life."
Wrapping up the two-hour listening session, he left a sincere remark: "It has been rare for me to listen to my recorded music together with fans," adding, "It was even better to be able to share a listening session with the album called 0-jip, and it was a moving time. Thank you so much for joining."
Meanwhile, Melon original project 'THE SOUND' offers a three-dimensional music experience to listeners by linking offline events, app live broadcasts and curation playlists. The main video from this Lee Seung-yoon episode will be released later on Melon's official YouTube, and Melon is also carrying out a variety of fandom-tailored programs such as the private event 'STAGE 99' and the interactive service 'Music Wave.'
