Actor Park So-dam moved audiences by sharing that while recuperating from cancer she received help from actor Lee Jung-eun.
On the morning of the 27th at Lotte Cinema Konkuk University entrance in Seoul, a production briefing was held for the film "Gyeongju Trip." The film "Gyeongju Trip," which opens on Aug. 26 (writer-director Kim Mi-jo, provided by Lotte Entertainment and Michigan Venture Capital Co., distributor Lotte Entertainment, produced by Studio HiFive, co-produced by Euphoria ENT), is a family revenge drama about four mothers and daughters who embark on a "killer" trip after eight years of waiting to avenge their youngest daughter Gyeongju, who never returned from her school trip. Actors Lee Jung-eun, Kong Hyojin, Park So-dam, Lee Yeon and director Kim Mi-jo attended the production briefing and shared their stories.
On that day Park So-dam shared her feelings about reuniting with Lee Jung-eun. The two had previously worked together in director Bong Joon-ho's 2019 film "Parasite." In this context, through "Gyeongju Trip," Lee Jung-eun and Park So-dam reunited after eight years to portray a mother, Ok-sil, who spent eight years dreaming only of revenge after losing her daughter, and the unemployed second daughter Yeong-ju, a law school graduate, respectively, performing as mother and daughter.
Park So-dam recalled filming "Parasite," saying, "When I think about the scene I shot with unnie in 'Parasite,' the line 'please move over' comes to mind. I glared at unnie, uttered that line and drove her out. While filming that, unnie and I really connected a lot."
She added, "After I became ill and while I was recuperating, unnie helped me a lot. She took care of me like a real mother. To be honest, it was hard to tell my family or my mother 100% how sick I was because I was worried they would worry. But Lee Jung-eun unnie showed she was struggling even when she worried and told me everything. She came to my house in the middle of the night and listened to me," she said, surprising the audience.
Park So-dam shocked the public when she revealed in 2021 that she had been battling papillary thyroid cancer. After a routine health check diagnosed her thyroid condition and she underwent surgery, she took a break and was unable to participate in promotional activities for the film "Special Delivery," which opened in January 2022.
When Park So-dam returned to acting the following year in the film "The Ghost," she said in an interview, "If the surgery had been delayed just a little, I might have lost the nerve in my voice. The location was very bad," adding, "Fortunately I did not undergo chemotherapy, but there were 10 lumps in my throat. It had spread to the lymph nodes. The professor said that if I promoted 'Special Delivery' I could lose the voice nerve, so surgery had to be done. He said that after lymph node metastasis the next site would be the lungs. If it had been delayed, I would have needed chemotherapy."
She said it took six months after the surgery to recover her voice, adding, "It has really improved a lot, but because of hormonal imbalance my skin is completely affected and may not look good. I am still in the process of recovering." She continued, "It's not exactly a set number of years to be declared fully cured, but now my voice has returned and I am managing my condition with rest. Still, I have to take medication for more than five years and find my pattern," indicating she is gradually regaining her condition.
It was later revealed that while Park So-dam was recovering from cancer surgery, Lee Jung-eun took meticulous care of her. Park So-dam said, "This time meeting as mother and daughter was wonderful in itself. In the film Yeong-ju has the most conflicts with her mother. I think the fact that you can have those conflicts is also because of a lot of love. She is a senior I am always very grateful to. I think I must do well by her for the rest of my life," expressing gratitude toward Lee Jung-eun and adding to the emotional resonance.
