Broadcaster-turned-announcer Jo Su-bin deleted a video after revealing a junior announcer's 5 billion won Banpo newly built APT. and facing controversy over the source of the funds.
On the 26th Jo Su-bin posted a video titled 'The Banpo newly built APT. bought by saving every little bit' on her YouTube channel Jo Subin Curation. In the video, Jo Su-bin visited the home of a junior announcer affiliated with a general programming channel who lives in Maple Xi in Jamwon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul.
Maple Xi is a representative newly built APT. in the Banpo area that began move-ins last year. The current market price for the standard 84㎡ unit, known as the national size, is formed between about 5 billion won and 6 billion won.
Jo Su-bin asked, "Actually announcer salaries are not high. We both work and bought the Banpo newly built move-in rights in a short period. Was there any method that helped a bit then?" The junior mentioned her know-how, saying, "I saved." When Jo Su-bin asked, "Didn't you invest in stocks or crypto?" the junior answered, "I didn't."
After the video was released, analyses emerged that it is not realistically possible to purchase move-in rights for a newly built Banpo APT. in Gangnam through simple saving without stock or crypto investments.
One netizen speculated, "Even if you conservatively estimate the purchase price of the move-in rights at 1.6 billion won at the time, a down payment of 160 million won and minimum self-funding of 900 million to 1 billion won for the balance would be required. Considering acquisition tax, brokerage fees and additional reconstruction contributions, it would have been funds of around at least 1.2 billion won."
The netizen continued, "Of course saving for nearly 10 years and comparing deposit interest rates to accumulate several hundred million won is impressive. But it is practically difficult to prepare 1.2 billion won with only an announcer's salary savings, and the numbers wouldn't add up unless you combined the husband's income and existing assets, or had loans, jeonse deposits, or support from both families."
The netizen added, "The story 'I saved on coffee and even broke my piggy bank to buy Maple Xi' is touching, but if a 160 million won down payment came from a piggy bank and nearly 1 billion won of the balance came from savings at a savings bank, I'd be more curious about that special structure. She explains her frugal tips in detail, but she peculiarly omits how she raised the initial self-funding of 900 million to 1 billion won."
Jo Su-bin explained, "We are dual-income. I worked in the company for a long time and invested in index funds for a long time. I bought the house quickly before regulations became stricter. And I minimized living expenses. Of course my parents helped, but it was not beyond social norms, and I know the circumstances; the two people played a big role," she said in explanation.
In response to Jo Su-bin's explanation some netizens reacted, "Isn't index fund investment stocks?", "Then isn't saying she bought it only with savings a lie?", "If parents helped then it wasn't bought with savings alone," and Jo Su-bin added, "I invested in stocks while buying the house and repaying loans at the same time. It wasn't simple index investing."
Despite Jo Su-bin's explanation netizens' questions grew, and the production team apologized, saying, "We wanted to show the subject's sincere life and investment philosophy, but during editing it was conveyed differently than intended." The thumbnail text was also changed from 'The Banpo newly built APT. bought by saving every little bit' to 'junior announcer housewarming', and the title was changed to 'visiting the beloved junior's new home decorated with carrot+refurbished items.'
Nevertheless, as comments about the source of funds continued, Jo Su-bin's side removed the video.
