Actor Joo Sang-Wook revealed a doting father moment.
On the 23rd at HB Entertainment headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, an end-of-series interview with actor Joo Sang-Wook from the SBS Friday-Saturday drama "Manager Kim" (written by Nam Dae-jung, directed by Lee Seung-young and Lee So-eun, planned by Studio S, produced by Studio S and Fantagio) was held.
Joo Sang-Wook played Joo Kang-chan, a construction company chairman who rose from being a hired thug, portraying in three dimensions everything from the ruthless charisma of a person in power to twisted paternal love and obsessive madness, showing a powerful presence.
He challenged himself with a villain role for the first time since his debut. He said he paid as much attention to his external appearance as that fact warranted. Joo Sang-Wook said, "When I read the script for part 1, I thought the first appearance is important. Since he carries one pillar of the drama, I wanted the first appearance to look cool," adding, "Of all things, it was a sauna. Then I had to take everything off. I started exercising from that point and worked extremely hard."
Joo Sang-Wook said, "There wasn't enough time, so one more month would have been perfect, but the shooting dates were set, so I worked really hard within that period and I am satisfied. Have I ever worked this hard? It was three months of intense exercise and strict diet," adding, "I think things like Joo Kang-chan's burn scars help viewers understand what kind of life he lived, and those accumulated things make viewers feel that Joo Kang-chan is a bad person."
When asked to rate his villain acting, he said, "I'm always a bit disappointed, but I think Joo Kang-chan is more than an 8. When I got beaten badly in episode 7, I didn't expect people to feel catharsis and enjoy it. Those fleeting expressions were better than humiliating gifs. It was the first time I tried such expressions. Family and acquaintances said, 'You got hit too hard, didn't you?' and felt sorry."
Asked how his wife Cha Ye-ryun reacted, he said, "My wife watches the drama as an individual viewer. Of course it's entertaining, and it would be strange to talk about acting within the family. She cheers me on a lot," adding, "Even during filming she urged me to hurry and try things, and although we'll never act together again, she gave suggestions like 'I hope this, I hope that,' and supported me a lot."
However, his 9-year-old daughter is still too young to watch. Joo Sang-Wook said, "She's absolutely not of an age to watch. I hope she still hasn't seen it even after she turns 15," adding, "She couldn't watch it anyway because she was scared. Even when a scene isn't scary, children find such things frightening. I have no intention of showing it to my daughter," revealing his doting father side.
When asked which character he related to more as a father, Manager Kim or Joo Kang-chan, he said, "The starting point seems the same. Manager Kim and Joo Kang-chan are the same as Jin-cheol and Han-su. They would risk everything, even their lives, for their children. That paternal love is the same," adding, "The starting point is the same, but in the process there are differences in method; doing things one shouldn't, and Joo Kang-chan doing 'everything' for his daughter makes him a bad person and that's wrong. I couldn't empathize with that at all while acting. I act from Joo Kang-chan's perspective; I never thought, 'what about the father?'"
Which of the four men is he actually closer to as a father? He laughed and said, "I am more like Jin-cheol (played by Yoon Kyung-ho). Security is fun, isn't it? After going through that hardship and making a fuss to get in, the sight of 'Dad, did you go out?' and being alone thinking 'how much I love them' feels like my future image. It seems similar to the real-life appearance of a father with a daughter."
