Actor Seo Sumin expressed gratitude to actor So Jisub, with whom she played a father-daughter pair.
On the 27th, at a cafe in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, a closing interview with Seo Sumin of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama Manager Kim was held.
Seo Sumin played Kim Min-ji, the daughter of Manager Kim (played by So Jisub), and left a deep impression on viewers by showing stable acting and a clear presence that belied the fact that this was her first drama challenge.
When asked how she felt about the drama ending successfully, Seo Sumin said, "I really didn't expect it to go this well, and I thought it would go well because I worked with great seniors, but that it went this well felt like a dream and a miracle," and added, "There were no bad situations with the staff and seniors on set, and we filmed in a good atmosphere, so I'm very thankful," expressing gratitude to those she worked with.
When asked whether joining a major production like Manager Kim as her debut work, and even playing So Jisub's daughter, must have been a heavy burden, Seo Sumin confessed, "It really was a big burden. Since the drama Manager Kim is based on a webtoon, webtoon fans might have worried whether a rookie actress could portray the character Min-ji well, and because it was my first time acting I started with the burden of worrying I might cause concern in terms of acting."
Seo Sumin added, "The director and the staff all raised me together and helped me act comfortably on set, so the burden gradually disappeared."
Nervous because the role was important from her first project, Seo Sumin said, "At first it didn't feel real. For a month I was beyond feeling anything and was in a state of 'What is this? Did this really happen?' I could only think 'Oh my god, amazing.' Then I devoted myself to practice," and confessed, "I'm grateful that a rookie with no filmography got such a substantial character, and that the character would be presented as So Jisub senior's daughter felt like it couldn't happen. When I heard I got the part, I was like 'Ah-'."
So Jisub's representative work in which he played the father, "I'm sorry, I love you," aired in 2004, long before Seo Sumin, born in 2007, was born. When asked if she knew So Jisub, she said, "I knew him and thought he was an incredibly good actor. I was really surprised. 'My dad? A senior who acts this well is my dad?' I thought," adding, "I worried I might be a hindrance, but when I met him on set he took care of me warmly and quietly supported me like a father, so I felt comfortable."
Had she seen works starring So Jisub? She said, "I watched Master's Sun, and I don't know if I saw all of I'm sorry, I love you but I know the story, and I also watched Only You," and about seeing So Jisub in person she said, "He had an aura. His face is small, and his proportions... I saw proportions I'd never seen before in my life and thought celebrities are different."
Recalling filming with So Jisub, Seo Sumin said, "I was shooting with the senior from the first shoot and was completely frozen; I felt pressure that I couldn't make mistakes, but he sweetly gave me a strawberry candy and said let's do our best. I calmed down immediately and began the first shoot."
She said the form of address naturally changed. Seo Sumin said, "At first I called him senior, but over time it turned into dad," and added, "My birthday happened during filming. My dad, senior So Jisub, said, 'It's Min-ji's birthday, right?' and gave me a DAY6 autograph. At the time the set was unfamiliar and I felt sorry for my lack in acting, so I cried the moment I saw that."
So Jisub, thinking of Seo Sumin, who is a DAY6 fan, got an autograph from DAY6 as a birthday present. Seo Sumin said, "I took pictures with the makeup team unnie and said 'lucky, lucky.' It was such a happy memory. Even when we weren't acting he treated me like his daughter, so I think that helped me express the father-daughter relationship well in later scenes."
When asked if she also received the 'gold gift' from So Jisub, she recalled, "On the last day of filming, senior So Jisub handed out gifts to the staff and actors and told us to open them later. I opened mine alone at home and it was gold, so I thought, 'What is this? Is this real gold? Is it a toy?' I thought, 'It's really gold, amazing.'"
Seo Sumin, moved to tears, said, "I don't think I could sell it. I think it's such a precious memento I couldn't sell it, and I'd keep it carefully. I think I'll have it as a family heirloom."
