Actor Bae Jong-ok confessed to a physical confrontation with writer Noh Hee-kyung.
On the 24th, episode 4 of Bae Jong-ok was released on the YouTube channel 'Song Seung-hwan's Wonderful Life.' The video captured a moment in which Bae Jong-ok met her close actor friend Song Seung-hwan and recalled her first meeting with writer Noh Hee-kyung.
Bae Jong-ok mentioned the filming of KBS 2TV drama 'Lies,' which aired in 1998, as a starting point. 'Lies' was a melodrama presented by writer Noh Hee-kyung, and Bae Jong-ok recalled, "I heard about it through Yun Yeo-jeong,"
However, writer Noh Hee-kyung and director Pyo Min-soo were already trying to cast another actress, Hwang Shin-hye, for 'Lies.' Bae Jong-ok said, "At that time Hwang Shin-hye unni had to get married so she said she wouldn't do it. So the project was left hanging. I was doing another project then and I was also busy lecturing at a regional university. From Noh Hee-kyung's perspective, she didn't like me. We all gathered in Gapyeong and discussed why that happened, and Noh Hee-kyung arrived late. I can't stand that kind of thing. But when 'Lies' came to me, I didn't feel good. She asked, 'You're busy; can you do it?' I said, 'I'll try,'" revealing behind-the-scenes details of appearing in 'Lies.'
He continued, "Back then we met at the China restaurant in Yeouido 63 Building and she said she wouldn't eat. I was so hungry I asked if I could just eat alone. Looking at me she must have thought, 'Is there an actress like that?' After that, our moods were bad and I heard that director Pyo Min-soo and I ate tteokbokki at a pojangmacha. They said they would never let an actor pay for their meal, so they couldn't do that," she laughed.
Meanwhile, regarding the rumor that Bae Jong-ok had a past physical altercation with Noh Hee-kyung, she said, "Rather than saying we fought, I was cast late. Everything was already set and I joined late. During rehearsal I wasn't even settled, and when I ate the snack in front of me, Noh Hee-kyung, who was a rookie writer then, was extremely sensitive, and the problem was that my acting wasn't good so she was upset. I didn't know that. But I felt during rehearsal that my acting wasn't good. I worried about how to resolve it," explaining, "After that rehearsal we took the elevator and it was just me and Noh Hee-kyung. Suddenly she grabbed my neck and shouted, 'Act better!' She was really angry. Noh Hee-kyung is quite small. She startled me and grabbed my neck. But I knew my acting wasn't good. So I pushed her away and said one word, 'I'll try.' Then she had nothing more to say."
She said, "After that I privately studied under a professor from the regional university where I lectured. I analyzed all the emotions for every line of the character. I memorized each emotion one by one. I memorized them all and there was coaching from the teacher, and on set I also improved as episodes 2, 3 and 4 went by. Looking back now, I think I really loved it. If someone asks which work remains the most for me, it's 'Lies.' It was the first work where I stood again as an actress," she said emphatically.
Also, Bae Jong-ok said, "Even after the physical confrontation there was psychological warfare. No matter how much you try, it takes time to get better. She didn't like me. Actor Lee Sung-jae was the counterpart role and his wife was Yoo Ho-jeong. I was playing a workplace superior who felt love. Wouldn't it feel unpleasant when two people in love walk along a cherry blossom path? I smiled there. Noh Hee-kyung, having watched the broadcast, called and asked, 'Why did you smile there?' I said, 'I understand, I'll think it over and do it well,' and hung up," adding, "It eased after episode 5. Maybe she felt the depth of emotion as it went on. There was nothing left to touch on."
He added, "In the early days writers would come to show support. Noh Hee-kyung came and Yun Yeo-jeong, Noh Hee-kyung and I met at a cafe opposite KBS. Noh Hee-kyung was saying something but to me she sounded like she was showing off. Without thinking I said, 'You seem like the type who shows off a lot, don't you?' Since she already didn't like the actor, Noh Hee-kyung grabbed my hand. I snapped back, 'So that's why you write, then.' In front of Yun Yeo-jeong, their exchange was so fierce that she kept looking awkwardly around," she laughed.
