That day Lee Hyun-yi said, "Today I invited a very special person. I met her on the program 'Dongchimi.' As I, the MC, listened to her speak, I thought, 'Oh?! I really want an older sister who is that close,'" and explained the reason for inviting her, saying, "Seeing her express the same worries, anger and frustration as we do made me determined that I really wanted to have her on, so I asked her to come."
Attorney Yang So-young was a working mom who sent all three of her children to Seoul National University. Lee Hyun-yi asked for the secret to raising her children, and Attorney Yang So-young said, "I was studying for exams when I suddenly got married, and my mother was also a working mom. I married and became pregnant without learning anything from my mother, so I read a lot of books," adding that she learned parenting through books.
Lee Hyun-yi asked, "Was preparing the foundation done with advanced lessons for basic skills or with workbooks?" Attorney Yang So-young, who said she built basic skills with workbooks, confessed, "They learned to read Korean quickly. I think reading is important, so I started reading early. English kindergarten all failed."
Attorney Yang So-young, who said she focused on Korean rather than English, modestly said, "Writing is important too, so I taught reading and writing separately. I think I went to university for Korean literature."
Then Lee Hyun-yi admitted, "Honestly, the hardest thing I've found raising them is motivation. Without that motivation they won't brush their teeth, and of course they won't do basic habits or study, so motivating them is very difficult," expressing her concerns.
Attorney Yang So-young said, "I always told my kids not to make their schedules too tight. I feel like if I just make a plan, everything on that plan will get done that day. You get excited making the plan and the day passes and the next day it doesn't go according to plan. They need to taste the sense of achievement from doing something by themselves," she said.
Second, she said she created gaps. Attorney Yang So-young explained, "I made coupons for when (homework) didn't have to be done, or you don't have to go to academy once a month, and if they do things diligently I give them grape stickers so they can get what they want."
Then Lee Hyun-yi said, "I also, like the attorney, remember how much I hated doing workbooks. I thought that. If my eldest says, 'Mom, is it okay if I don't do it today?' I allow it."
She went on, "But my husband says he's never postponed anything in his life. He still lives that way. He doesn't know how to procrastinate, so he can't understand our eldest at all. In his eyes," she said.
