'EXchange / Transit Love 4' alumnus dermatologist and influencer Shin Seung-yong apologized for the violent behavior he displayed on 'Blood Game X'.
On the 25th, Shin Seung-yong posted a lengthy apology on his blog. This was regarding the content of episode 5 of the Wavve variety show 'Blood Game X', which was released the day before.
Earlier, episode 5 of 'Blood Game X' featured the 'day of plunder' event. 'Day of plunder' is a 2-on-2 alliance team match, and the main premise is "by any means necessary to steal or protect the funds in the safe." During the 60-minute time limit, the outside team must plunder the funds in the mansion's safe, and the inside team must prevent this.
In this, Shin Seung-yong, who was on the inside team, confronted members of the outside team who were fleeing with a money bag, and in the process drew criticism for violent behavior. Outside team member Seo Chul-gu lured Shin Seung-yong with a fake money bag, and Shin Seung-yong strongly pulled to take the bag from him. At that time Seo Chul-gu had wrapped a string around his hand to prevent the bag from being taken, but Shin Seung-yong pushed through with force, and Seo Chul-gu's hand was ultimately cut deeply by the string, causing a burn. Park Ji-min, who witnessed the situation, was at a loss and sought help, and Seo Chul-gu, who had his bag taken, sat down complaining of pain, saying "this isn't right." In an interview with the production staff he confessed, "The atmosphere was different from what I expected. I really intended to do WWE but the opponent came in like UFC. The pain in my hand wouldn't go away so I couldn't do anything."
After that, Shin Seung-yong spotted Park Ji-min and Lee Sang-min, who were running away with a money bag, and engaged in another physical fight. At that time Shin Seung-yong grabbed the nape of Park Ji-min, who was holding the bag to his chest, and pulled, producing a violent scene in which Park Ji-min fell to the ground and was dragged along. Park Ji-min screamed "it hurts," and Lee Sang-min, asking "won't you get hurt?", tried to stop Shin Seung-yong and fell to the ground with him. Nonetheless, Shin Seung-yong paid it no heed and used force to take the money bag, spilled the bundles of cash onto the floor and left them thrown as he moved. There was also a dizzying scene in which he fought physically with Lee Tae-kyun, Jeong Geun-woo and Heo Seong-beom on a stair railing.
After the broadcast ended, viewers flooded criticism of Shin Seung-yong's extreme violent acts. Along with that, there were sharp criticisms and protests aimed at the producers for staging a situation that made violence possible with the rule "by any means necessary" and airing uncomfortable scenes without editing. In response, Shin Seung-yong ultimately posted himself and apologized, saying, "I knew I would be criticized even before 'day of the raid' aired, but when I actually watched the broadcast I didn't like my appearance. Right after episode 5 aired I called hyung Sang-min, nuna Ji-min and Chul-gu to apologize once more. I kept apologizing during filming and immediately after I apologized via direct message, but it felt insufficient so I called to apologize once more," he said.
He bowed his head and said, "Fortunately, everyone comforted me by saying they understood and it's okay, which made me feel more sorry and lacking. I apologize sincerely to those who wanted to relieve stress by watching the broadcast but were inadvertently made uncomfortable or stressed by me. I believe no words or excuses can justify the violent parts, and I am truly sorry, regretful and reflective on that point. I will accept any rebuke at any time."
Along with this, Shin Seung-yong added an explanation of his actions. He explained, "Looking back to the time of filming I was really out of it and didn't know what to do. I was consumed by the simple thought that I had to protect it and couldn't lose. After encountering Chul-gu, when he feigned hiding the pouch I thought, 'ah, this is what I must protect and it's already been stolen,' and from then on I acted excessively. Stupidly, I thought my limit was to shove the face or not inflict direct bodily harm, so I tried only to take the pouch, but when he used force and wouldn't give it I simply thought I should use force too."
He added, "It is an excuse, but I didn't notice the string wrapped around his hand and I thought he was just holding the string, so I didn't expect it to injure him so much," and said, "In any case, it is entirely my fault that I hurt Chul-gu and not the production staff at all. After things calmed down somewhat I became aware of the wound on Chul-gu's hand and promised that I would make sure he received treatment. I will take responsibility for what happened because of me."
He apologized over the confrontation with Park Ji-min and Lee Sang-min as well, saying, "Watching my actions on camera they were too violent and uncomfortable to see. I am of course very sorry to nuna Ji-min and hyung Sang-min and I apologize to those who watched this scene." Regarding throwing away the bundles of cash he said, "At the time I still didn't know what I needed to protect, and the pouch I checked from Chul-gu only had potatoes, notebooks and pens, so I quickly emptied nuna Ji-min's pockets to check. Only after I emptied them did I realize it was bundles of cash, and I tried to pick them up but given the time constraints I thought continuously picking them up would be too much of a loss and that other team members could handle that amount." He added, "I did not create this situation to show off strength."
He added, "There was a drinking gathering the night before the day of the raid. Although the drinking gathering lasted quite a long time, I barely drank," clarifying that he did not commit the violent acts while intoxicated. Regarding crying afterward he said, "Office workers or those who work indoors may still be able to carry on their lives despite some injuries, but those who do broadcasting as their main job could have problems with other broadcasts or shoots even from a simple wound, so I felt deeply sorry and regretful. After the situation was sorted out I naturally apologized multiple times, but I felt I had crossed the line so badly that I felt guilty," and reiterated, "I apologize again for causing discomfort."
But even after Shin Seung-yong's apology was posted, debate continued. Some netizens defended him, saying he was simply immersed in the game and acted legitimately within the given rules. On the other hand, others pointed out that the absence of a 'no violence' rule does not justify violent acts. Furthermore, many expressed shock and disappointment that, unlike his profession as a doctor, he showed no hesitation or sign of remorse when injuring others by force. However, separate from this, opinions followed that excessive criticism toward the cast should be restrained.<
