(continuing from interview ④) actor Kwak Dong- yeon shared filming anecdotes with Nam Joo-hyuk, Roh Yoon-seo and Cho Seung-woo, who he worked with on East Palace.
East Palace, released on the 17th, is the story of Gucheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), who has the ability to traverse the world of ghosts (⻤), and the court lady Saenggang (Roh Yoon-seo), who keeps a secret, answering the king's (Cho Seung-woo) summons and unraveling the curse that haunts the East Palace. In the drama, Kwak Dong- yeon appeared as the crown prince and delivered a passionate performance.
Kwak Dong- yeon spoke about the much-discussed one-on-one scene with Cho Seung-woo, saying, I only had that one scene where I deliver lines with a normal face. I even grumbled, saying, 'They cast an actor and didn't have him act, they only had him in special makeup,' so the day we filmed that scene was enjoyable. And because the senior is widely recognized, on set I was able to perform whatever acting I wanted under the director's guidance with confidence, she said, adding, I met him for the first and last time that day, and the senior didn't seem very outgoing. Because of that, we couldn't talk much, she said with regret.
About Nam Joo-hyuk, with whom he exchanged the most action scenes, he said, This time I met an incredibly cool senior actor. Because the set was tight, I couldn't have many private conversations, but I had a mission in my heart. A close acquaintance's mother is a huge fan of Nam Joo-hyuk and I promised to get her an autograph by the last shoot, but I just couldn't ask. I remember postponing it until the very end and then asking for his autograph, and he gave it, he said, adding that they didn't become close, which drew laughter.
He said, He did action so well. Especially when we fought, the sword was very long in the latter part. With that long sword he fought even in the narrow set, and the stunt team achieved the desired moves with precision while keeping them safe. Sometimes male actors push themselves to be more realistic and intense during action, which can be risky, but he delivered the agreed-upon moves and brought scenes to life without any danger, so I felt very comfortable.
Asked about Roh Yoon-seo, who appeared as his half-sister in the drama, he admired, I think I saw her giving her all at every shoot. She kept coordinating with the director and was considerate of co-stars to ensure no discomfort while acting. Although I was on set for a long period, there were times she only came one day each month, so they also took time to care for her so she wouldn't feel awkward when she arrived. Her refusal to give up until the end and her stamina made her an impressive person.
Because his role offered few opportunities to build close friendships with other actors, Kwak Dong- yeon said, I think it was more because of my role. There were times of warm physical contact, communication, laughing and enjoying ourselves on set, but more often we filmed serious, life-or-death scenes that required attention to safety. So it ended up being like that, but everyone was very nice and I have good memories of them, he said, describing the atmosphere on set.
