Actor Roh Yoon-seo conveyed the atmosphere on the set of "East Palace."
On the 23rd, at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, an interview was held with lead actor Roh Yoon-seo for the Netflix series East Palace (written by Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, directed by Choi Jeong-gyu, planned and produced by Shonorous, Imaginus).
East Palace is the story of Gucheon, who has the ability to cross the world of ghosts (⻤), and the court lady Saenggang, who keeps secrets, who, summoned by the king, investigate the curse dwelling in the east palace, and the events that unfold. It recorded 4.9 million views three days after its release on the 17th, ranking No. 2 on the global top 10 non-English shows, and immediately after release it took No. 1 on "today's top 10 series in Korea." It also appeared on the top 10 lists in a total of 27 countries, including Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines and India, as well as Korea.
In this work that brings out the charm of Korean-style fantasy historical drama, Roh Yoon-seo achieved various transformations within a single work, showing a new face that the public had not seen before. Within a unique worldview that encounters ghosts and the novel concept of shamanism, Roh Yoon-seo delicately expressed the mysterious and secretive psychology of Saenggang, and in the process of investigating the strange incidents linked to the palace she displayed firm charisma, revealing the opposite side. She achieved a distinctive acting transformation with a spectrum that simultaneously digested the character's deep inner life and autonomous growth within a single work.
Roh Yoon-seo spoke about her chemistry with Nam Joo-hyuk, who plays Gucheon, saying, "He was reliable. In action scenes and in the back-and-forth between Gucheon and Saenggang, he is someone with a lot of experience, so I felt I could create scenes in this way. We were in sync when discussing scenes. Our opinions matched well, and it was comforting to film comfortably on set. It was fun when we filmed together."
She then spoke about Cho Seung-woo, who plays the king, saying, "He felt like a distant senior, but on set he played jokes freely without any distance. I became very comfortable while filming, and what impressed me was that when we worked together I received a lot of energy so I inevitably became Saenggang, and in the process of creating the scenes he was more detailed and deeper than I expected, which felt meticulous." she said, adding, "He is really a prankster. He made me feel very comfortable, and as I became comfortable I was able to play back and our joking matched well. On set he danced girl group moves like 'Whiplash' and 'Hype Boy' while joking. I followed along and did that too. He had a clip fan so because he's a new generation he later put stickers on it and gave it as a gift. His appearance at the production presentation was also his usual natural self."
Regarding her chemistry with Jang Young-nam, she said, "I have always been a fan of Jang Young-nam, and it was a pity that we only briefly worked together in Ilta Scandal. I was glad to meet her again in this work, and I liked that there was such a scene; watching her act in front of me and seeing the process of building a character, I was impressed. I received energy while acting and felt catharsis."
At the center of such a relaxed set was always Roh Yoon-seo. She said, "I know I tend to have a sharp sense of timing, and I think there's fun in teasing. Because I acted playfully, everyone treated me comfortably, I think. I also enjoyed being teased. I find it fun and good to keep such a comfortable atmosphere on set, and I also brought snacks, played jokes instead, asked more about people's recent lives, and made more effort," she laughed.
