Actor Angelina Jolie has moved to take legal steps to remove even her daughter Vivien's former husband Brad Pitt's surname, and her feelings about this have been conveyed, drawing attention.
According to Page Six's report on the 22nd (local time), a close aide to Jolie told a media outlet, "Jolie does not want a fight right now and is not angry. She simply hopes everyone will heal their wounds," conveying Jolie's state of mind.
The aide then cautiously revealed the inside story. He said, "If the public knew all the truth, they would feel deeper sympathy for the children and respect them," and emphasized, "The fact that the children do not publicly criticize their father or disclose private matters is itself evidence of how dignified and properly they have been raised." Representatives for both Pitt and Jolie have not yet issued an official statement on this.
Earlier, the youngest daughter Vivien, who turned 18, filed a petition on July 20 in Los Angeles Superior Court to change her legal name from 'Vivien Marcheline Jolie-Pitt' to 'Vivien Marcheline Jolie.' The reason given for the name change was briefly listed on the paperwork as "personal reasons." "Marcheline" is the name of Jolie's biological mother, who died in 2007 after battling cancer.
Vivien's legal action has again brought to the surface the deep family discord that has continued for nearly a decade since Pitt and Jolie's breakup in 2016. The two finalized their divorce in December 2024 after a long legal battle. They have six children: Maddox (24), Pax (22), Zahara (21), Shiloh (20), and twins Knox and Vivien.
Notably, Vivien is not the first child to drop Pitt's surname. A significant number of the six siblings have already chosen to erase their father.
Eldest Maddox already filed legal paperwork in May to change his surname to "Jolie," and when he worked as an assistant director on a film his mother appeared in, he was credited as "Maddox Jolie." Fourth child Shiloh also filed for a name change in May this year immediately after turning 18 and had it approved. Third child Zahara also completed a petition in June to change her name to "Zahara Jolie."
Youngest son Knox has not yet taken legal steps, but it was confirmed that at his Los Angeles Fusion Academy high school graduation in June he used the name "Knox Jolie" on his diploma. Vivien also drew attention by listing her name as "Vivien Jolie" in the program for the Broadway musical Outsider, which she helped produce with her mother, in May before filing the legal petition.
By contrast, second son Pax has shown a somewhat different course, drawing interest. While Pax maintains a somewhat distant relationship with his father Brad Pitt, he is reported to still communicate closely and maintain a warm relationship with paternal relatives such as aunts and cousins.
