Super Junior Kim Hee-cheul confessed to being a victim of a deepfake crime that illicitly synthesized his face and voice, stressing its seriousness.
On the 21st, a video titled "Searching for the roots of Super Junyong" was released on the YouTube channel Salon Drip. That day Jang Do-youn toured the SM Entertainment building with Super Junior's Leeteuk and Kim Hee-cheul.
The three who visited SM's artist-only recording studio also heard an explanation of the company's legal system. SM introduced that it has in-house lawyers who handle malicious comments, the spread of false information, and artist rights infringement cases, and that it also operates its own reporting system called "Gwangya 119."
It was reported that recently a perpetrator who produced and distributed illegal deepfake posts was caught and received a prison sentence. Hearing this, Kim Hee-cheul revealed that he too had been a victim of a deepfake. He said, "Chimchakman is also my friend, but a video circulated showing Chimchakman and me doing an advertisement for a gambling site." He recalled at the time, "They not only made my face but also recreated my voice exactly," and said, "I was so scared I reported it to the company immediately."
SM said, "Gwangya 119 receives more than 200 submissions a day," and explained, "Reports come in covering not only human rights violations of artists but also ideas or style plagiarism of content, and even tips related to hairstyles."
That day Kim Hee-cheul continued his characteristically candid talk. To the remark that he is the "SM representative blunt speaker" he joked, "I rank first among entertainers who should not find their original intentions," and he also revealed an anecdote that in the past he even received a suspension of practice.
On the other hand, leader Leeteuk recalled, "I had to endure because I was the leader." He added, "In the early days after debut, outings were not even freely allowed as part of artist management," and said, "Shindong completed a mission of signing 1,500 autographs to receive an outing reward of two nights and three days."
