Actor Ku Hye-sun mentioned symptoms of anaphylactic shock that led her to consider leaving the drama, and she said all symptoms have now disappeared, drawing attention. However, debate over Ku Hye-sun's remarks has continued daily.
On the 18th, Ku Hye-sun appeared as a guest on MBN Kim Ju-ha's Day and Night and mentioned the process of leaving the 2017 drama You Are Too Much.
Earlier, Ku Hye-sun had appeared on MBC's You Are Too Much up to episode 6 but had to urgently leave the drama due to worsening health. At the time, the production team explained, "After several meetings, we tried to find a way to continue with Ms. Ku Hye-sun. But considering that she needs to devote herself to recovery for the time being, we made the final decision for her to leave the drama after careful consideration."
Her agency also said, "As a result of hospital tests, Ms. Ku Hye-sun has a severe allergic gastrointestinal disorder that requires absolute rest and long-term treatment according to the attending physician's opinion, and she is currently hospitalized," and it was reported that the illness Ku Hye-sun suffered from was anaphylaxis.
Recalling the time, Ku Hye-sun said, "I know it as a food allergy. They used a method that involved inserting needles into the back for testing, and it showed allergies to most foods."
In particular, Ku Hye-sun said she once fainted in the bathroom because of an anaphylactic shock. She said, "Once I fainted in the bathroom, and a janitor found me by seeing hair that had come out the door. It was to the point that I thought, 'I hope they hadn't opened the door,'" expressing how painful the situation was at the time.
In the end, Ku Hye-sun recalled, "People have to eat to live, so you can't not eat. Before dying, I thought about the food I wanted to eat and really wanted marinated crab. But shellfish are the most sensitive to allergies. I was prescribed allergy medicine and even prepared an anaphylactic shock injection and took it. I had the mindset of 'eat and die.'"
She added, "But strangely, no symptoms were found, and after that I began to eat everything well. When I decided to live, the allergy occurred, and when I ate as if to die, I (overcame it)."
Netizens' responses to Ku Hye-sun's remarks were sharply divided. Some netizens said Ku Hye-sun's comments could lead to misunderstandings about anaphylactic shock, reacting, "Allergy and anaphylaxis should be distinguished," "Anaphylaxis is not a disease that gets better," and "If severe, it leads to shock and death—what are you talking about?"
Some argued it was simply Ku Hye-sun's personal experience, responding, "Allergies normally vary in degree depending on a person's condition," and "Theory is theory, and she said she experienced it herself."
About four days have passed since Ku Hye-sun's Day and Night broadcast was released, but reactions from both sides remain intense. With the fallout continuing, Ku Hye-sun has not issued a separate position regarding this.
