Actor Jang Seo-hee returns to her home network KBS's primetime drama slot after 12 years. A powerful prologue that foretells suffocating tension and the birth of a colossal villain has been unveiled.
Ahead of its first broadcast on Aug. 10, KBS 2TV's new daily drama A Trap Called Desire (directed by Lee Dae-kyung, Jeong Kwang-soo / written by Koo Ji-won / produced by Studio Bom, Monster Union) released today (21st) the first teaser video that captures protagonist Jang Seo-hee's hidden ambition and cruel true nature.
A Trap Called Desire is a revenge drama of fate in which a woman, whose entire life was taken from her after being falsely accused of murder, fights against a whirlpool of overwhelming desire.
The released first teaser opens with Joo Mi-ran (played by Jang Seo-hee) staring sharply as she begins to harbor dangerous desires for someone else's glamorous life. In the drama, Joo Mi-ran looks at Kim Jung-sun (played by Yoon Hae-young) and Kang Young-hoon (played by Yoo Tae-woong), a married couple who are key figures in Korea's leading corporation, Cheongma Group, and deepens her longing for the perfect life she does not have. In particular, Jang Seo-hee's low, chilling voice reciting lines such as "It was mine. All of it. How do you think it feels to have your whole life taken? I have to take it back" proves Joo Mi-ran's twisted obsession to swallow someone else's life whole and sends shivers through viewers.
But the perfect life Joo Mi-ran has built up with lies begins to shake uncontrollably when she reunites with an old friend, Park Hee-jung (played by Seo Yoo-jung). Park Hee-jung, who knows the shocking past Joo Mi-ran hid and the secret that she gave birth to a child, says, "Even if I erased all your past, there is one thing you can't erase. The daughter you gave birth to," tightening the noose. Facing the harsh reality she has long avoided, tension rises to a peak over what choice Joo Mi-ran will make.
Here, Park Hee-jung's daughter Ko Eun-seol (played by Jeon Hye-won) and Cheongma Group's sole heiress Kang Hae-ra (played by Joo Saebyeok) also draw attention with their tangled tragic fates. The scenes of Ko Eun-seol's once peaceful life collapsing in an instant, Kang Hae-ra revealing her vicious true nature, and Park Hee-jung's sharp cry, "What on earth did you do?" hint at the catastrophic ruin that Joo Mi-ran's relentless greed will bring.
At the end of the video, Joo Mi-ran leaves a line like a single scream, "I should have grabbed the last chance," foreshadowing a meticulous and cruel scheme to protect her false life. Attention is focused on how far she will run wild for her endless desire.
Jang Seo-hee has long reigned as the unrivaled symbol of "ruthless revenge dramas," producing hit works that marked a chapter in the history of Korean dramas such as Mermaid and Temptation of Wife.
Meanwhile, A Trap Called Desire, directed by Lee Dae-kyung (Youth of May, etc.) and written by Koo Ji-won (Cheer Up My Life, etc.), will air its first episode on Aug. 10 (Mon.) at 7:50 p.m., following the currently airing Pearl in Red.
